Duke Head Coach David Cutcliffe
Opening Statements:
“I'm very appreciative of all the energy in the stadium. Starting with the walk, it was incredible. The atmosphere tonight was what you dream about in college football. Then we did the unthinkable and just really started slow with a very experienced unit on offense. And I think it threw our team into a little of shock – not just the offensive kids. Our defense had to fight to keep from being dominated by our offense for a while around here. The emotions were hard to overcome. Once we settled down, we played good, but not quite good enough.”
“We open up with a chance to make first down and we drop the ball – it's just not what we do. We didn't manage some of the pressure a couple of times, but we put that behind us pretty quickly. The bottom line was you can't be erratic and you can't not take care of the ball … If you look at the numbers, our defense had a pretty good night. You just can't give up explosives. We've got a lot to build on.”
“We all anticipated – and for the right reasons – that we were going to play well. When you feel like you give one away, they really hurt.”
“Tomorrow will end up being get better Sunday for us. We have no choice. We have a great Stanford team coming in here, and we can't play erratic and beat Stanford. But we can beat Stanford if we play well.”
Duke Junior Wide Receiver Conner Vernon
On the game:
“It is tough when stuff like that happens. Offensively, we didn't come out and execute like we needed to do.”
On whether or not the team was pressing:
“We had a plan, but we just didn't execute it offensively. I just don't know. I can't tell you what happened. I just know we didn't execute and play the game we know how to play.”
On the game's final drive:
“Just as close as possible. We know Will has a big leg, so we were just trying to get it as close as possible, and we came up short this time. Stuff like that happens.
“What's done is done. We can't get this game back. So right now we just have to take it in, forget about it, and move on. We have a top 5 team coming in next week, so we just kind of have to put this one behind us and get ready for Stanford.”
On the running game:
“That is what we have been practicing all summer and spring which is to develop the running game and take the pressure off of our passing game. We ran the ball pretty well tonight, but not nearly as what we wanted to do. We still ran it pretty well. It did take some of the stress off of our passing game. Again, we still really didn't play well through the air. Again, I just can't tell you what happened. I am just in shock.”
Duke Redshirt Junior Quarterback Sean Renfree
On the game:
“I don't have much to say. I don't think we executed very well. We have to look at a lot of different holes that we have to work on. It is just very frustrating. I don't have much to say right now.”
On the final drive of the first half:
“We just messed up and it was just a frustrating play right there. I think we could have gotten the ball spiked and kicked a field goal, but we just didn't get it done.”
On the offense in the second half:
“Yeah, we ran more, so it kind of opened up some more passes. I think the game was well called. We just didn't execute very well.”
On establishing the run:
“Yeah, I think we tried to establish that first just trying to run the football.”
On the missed field goal late in the fourth quarter:
“You know you expect to make those, but it happens. We should have put the football in the end zone there so we didn't have to kick a field goal. Everybody struggles day to day. I think it falls on the offense.”
Duke Redshirt Senior Kicker Will Snyderwine
On the missed 28-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter:
“I just pushed it. It is tough. I got out there expecting to make everything that is put in front of me, and sometimes it just doesn't go your way. You just don't hit like you are supposed to, and that's what happened.”
On the 60-yard field goal attempt as time expired:
“Well you know, I thought I hit that well. It looked like it had the distance to me. I wasn't quite sure. I will have to go back and watch it. I can hit those. I should hit those. Honestly, I should have that one too. They are both tough but that is just the beauty of sports, you get to come out and do it again. We are going to work hard this week and we have a game next week to get ready for.”
On the atmosphere of the locker room after the game:
“People are obviously disappointed. People expect to win every game. Sometimes it is tough. It is humbling. I think everyone realizes that one game doesn't define the season. I think we will come out and work hard for next week.”
Richmond Head Coach Wayne Lineburg
Opening Statements:
“Just a tremendous win for our kids. I think they've hung together over some adverse conditions over the last few weeks and we're all just proud of them and we're proud of the staff for sticking together and doing things the right way. We've got great kids in this program and it showed tonight. They played hard and got after it, and it was a great win for the program.”
On the third quarter:
“I think both teams just kind of looked like they found a little bit of rhythm on offense. On our side of the ball I think Aaron [Corp] and Tre [Gray] made some plays out there, and Kendall Gaskins started getting the run game going. Those guys, they kind of looked like they started to run the ball and maybe started to wear us down just a little bit, but our guys hung in there and when it mattered really made some plays at the end that obviously won the game for us.”
On adversity over the last week:
“I just think it's about these kids and how they hang together and how tough they are. I just think it's a great group of kids that works hard and they believe in each other. It's more about them than anything else.”
On the defense:
“Every time we needed a play those guys kept stepping up and making a play.”
On Tre Gray's big catches:
“I wouldn't trade him for anybody. He's as a tough a kid as they come. He made a lot of huge plays and a lot of runs after catches that were crucial in the game.”
