HANNOVER, Germany – With the help of Duke incoming freshmen
Brigid Smith and
Taylor Trimble, Team USA captured its fourth consecutive Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) Under-19 Women's World Championship over the weekend with a come-from-behind, 14-11 victory over rival Australia. In addition, Trimble, who was serving as captain of the U.S. squad, was named to the All-World Team for her performance at the event.
Australia and the United States had met in pool play of the 2011 tournament with Team USA cruising to the 20-7 victory, but the U.S. faced a 6-3 deficit midway through the first half of the world championship final. Team USA cut the margin to 7-5 later in the period before Smith pulled the U.S. within one on a free position shot. The United States was able to tie the score at seven-all heading into halftime and utilized a 5-0 run in the second half to capture the title.
"It's just incredible," said Trimble. "We had every reason to freak out. We had never been in that position before, but we were poised, and it resulted in a victory. Turning around with the world cup and seeing everyone's faces was just so great."
With the victory, the United States capped off an unblemished 8-0 run to the title. The U.S. has only lost one game in the five U-19 world championship tournaments, falling to Australia in the final at the inaugural event in 1995.
