EUGENE, Ore. – Duke sophomore decathlete Curtis Beach wrapped up the USA Championships Friday, finishing in seventh place overall in the men's senior competition. The USA Championships serve as the selection event for the Team USA roster that will compete at the IAAF World Championships set for Aug. 27-Sept. 4 in Daegu, South Korea.
Sitting in eighth place after day one, Beach dominated the field in the final event of the competition, running 4:12.54 over 1,500 meters, nearly 12 seconds ahead of the second place finisher. The Albuquerque, N.M., native finished the USA Championships with 7,573 points, good for seventh place.
Also competing at the USA Championships was Duke alumna Shannon Rowbury. Rowbury, one of Duke's most decorated alumni, finished in third in the women's senior 1,500m, crossing the finish line in 4:06.20.
Running concurrently with the U.S. National Championships is the Canadian National Championships, where Duke All-America Kate Van Buskirk took to the track in the 1,500m. Van Buskirk finished in fourth place with a time of 4:24.39 from Foothills Athletic Park in Calgary, Alberta.
