DURHAM, N.C. – Duke reliever
Ben Grisz signed a professional contract with the Washington Nationals on Wednesday and will become Duke's 14th active player in professional baseball.
A 6-1, 220-pound right-hander, Grisz was the workhorse of the Duke bullpen over the last two seasons and made 55 appearances in his three-year career. He threw over 100 innings and logged 85 strikeouts during his tenure while posting a 6-7 record, 5.72 ERA and four saves.
Grisz was an early graduate and received his diploma from Duke University in May. A native of Dallas, Texas (St. Mark's), Grisz joins 2010 Duke graduate
Christopher Manno in the Nationals organization. Manno currently pitches for Class-A Hagerstown and owns a 0.29 ERA, eight saves and 49 strikeouts in 31 innings as a reliever.
Grisz is the second Duke player to move on to the professional ranks this year and the 14th Blue Devil under sixth-year head coach
Sean McNally to join an MLB organization. Senior
Dennis O'Grady was also drafted in the 34th round of the 2011 MLB Draft by the San Diego Padres.
