Durham N.C.- The final day of the ACC Championships have come to a close with the Duke women finishing fourth with 81.5 points and the men in fifth with 86.5 points. These totals are a Duke record for points scored at the ACC championships.
The first points of the final day of competition were picked up by junior Tony Shirk. Shirk cleared 16'2.75” to take seventh place in the men's pole vault and pick add two to the Blue Devils total. Freshman Michelle Anumba also had a seventh place finish in the women's weight throw with a fourth round throw of 178'2”.
In the men's hammer, seniors David Piccirlli and fifth year Mike Schallmo brought in four more points for Duke. Picirlli's fourth round throw of 186' moved him to sixth place and while Schallmo's opening toss of 177'8” carried him in eighth through the competition.
In the first individual final of the day, fifth year senior Kate Van Buskirk ran a gutsy 1,500m. Taking the lead early and setting the pace, Van Buskirk pushed to a 4:16.68 victory to add a third ACC Championship to Duke's collection.
The next Blue Devil to add to the growing point total was junior Brittany Whitehead, the first Duke athlete to make the finals in a sprint in five years, ran 55.63 in the 400. Running from lane eight she was able to get sixth place for three more points. On the men's side, Matt Pridemore finished his 400m final in seventh place with a time of 47.94.
Next on the track senior Devotia Moore and junior Cydney Ross took to the 800m finals. Both ran a strong race and Ross was able to finish in fifth place with a 2:06.01 while Moore finished seventh in 2:08.44.
Closing out the individual events, Juliet Bottorff ran a strong 5,000m to capture second place in a time of 16:22.57. Bottorff was followed closely behind by Madeline Morgan, who finished in the fourth position with 16:33.53. On the men's side, senior Josh Lund closed out his final ACC with a third place finish in the 5,000m. His time of 13:58.87 added him to list the list of All-ACC Blue Devils.
To close out the meet, the 4x400 relay teams LaCresha Styles, Ross, Moore and Whitehead finished third in their heat and eighth overall to pick up the last point for Duke.
