Wes Roach and sophomore
Julian Suri posted two-over 74s on Friday to lead Duke to an 11th-place start after one round of play at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters. The Blue Devils closed the day with a 16-over 304.
No. 11 Texas A&M holds the first round lead with an eight-under 280.
Roach continued his steady play with a two-over 74 on Friday. After opening the day with a bogey on No. 10, he birdied No. 11 and No. 13 to move to one-under. Following bogeys on No. 15 and No. 17, Roach birdied the par 5 18th hole to make the turn at even-par. The Knoxville, Tenn., native suffered a double-bogey on the par 5 third hole before closing with four pars, a birdie on the par 4 seventh hole and a bogey on No. 9. Roach is tied for 17th entering the second round of play.
Suri rebounded from a rocky start to post a two-over 74. The St. Augustine, Fla., native carded five bogeys on his opening nine holes before recovering to post six pars and three birdies after the turn. Suri posted birdies on No. 3, No. 6 and No. 9 to close the day tied for 17th.
Tim Gornik, a sophomore from Slovenia, is tied for 56th after posting a six-over 78 in the opening round. He carded two birdies, 12 pars, three bogeys, a double-bogey and a triple-bogey.
Sophomore
Brinson Paolini recorded eight pars and one bogey on the opening nine holes to make the turn at one-over. He suffered four bogeys on the opening five holes of the front nine to slip to five-over. Paolini recovered to play the final four holes at one-over to enter the second round tied for 56th with a six-over 78.
Freshman
Yaroslav Merkulov struggled en route to a seven-over 79 on Friday. The Penfield, N.Y., native had 12 pars on the day but also suffered five bogeys and a double-bogey. He is currently tied for 59th heading into tomorrow's second round.
