NEW ORLEANS, La. - Over the final four holes of the day, the fifth-ranked Duke women's golf team registered six birdies to close the afternoon with a two-over-par, 290, on its way to finishing tied for third overall at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Golf Championship.
The Blue Devils posted a 54-hole total of 879 to finish tied for third along with host Tulane, while Southern California won the tournament with an 868. Alabama (872), Duke (879), Tulane (879), Purdue (880), Virginia (880), Arizona State (882), Texas A&M (885), LSU (887) and Auburn (888) rounded out the top 10.
“I thought our attitudes were real good and thought we were a real patient team,” said Duke Head Coach
Dan Brooks. “The finish of our final day was the most patient we were in the tournament and that led to our moving up to third. I hope they take a look at that and learn a good lesson.”
As a team, Duke registered 16 birdies in the final round at the 6,105-yard, par 72 English Turn Golf and Country Club.
“We had the kind of golf going much of this tournament to have won the tournament,” said Brooks. “We made some management mistakes that cost us the win, but our shot-making was good enough to win. We just made some management errors.”
Led by sophomore
Lindy Duncan's four-under-par, 68, the Blue Devils were looking like they were going to finish as far as sixth or seventh place but a strong finish propelled them up the leaderboard to third. Duncan closed the championship with a three-day total of 213 along with Duke freshman
