Story #11: Academic Achievement
Headlined by two individual accomplishments, Duke Athletics continued its academic success in 2011. A member of Duke's swimming and diving program, Allie Speidel was named one of 31 recipients of the 2011 Marshall Scholarship, which finances American students pursue graduate studies in the United Kingdom, while fencer Dorian Cohen earned one of 26 post-graduate scholarships from the NCAA.
For the 23rd time in the last 24 years, Duke led the ACC in Academic Honor Roll selections while three Blue Devils – Sophia Dunworth (volleyball), Bo Waggoner (men's cross country) and Jasmine Thomas (women's basketball) – were named the ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year in their respective sports. As well, Cohen, Thomas and Christopher Tweed-Kent (men's soccer) earned CoSIDA Academic All-America accolades.
In addition, Duke boasted a 97 percent Graduation Success Rate (GSR) as 14 teams achieved a perfect 100 percent GSR and all 26 squads earned at least an 83 percent mark. Duke paced the ACC in all three categories.
