Wenger netted his 12th goal of the year and Duke posted its first shutout since August 30, a 1-0 victory at Furman. The Blue Devils last loss came on September 9 in a 1-0 setback to ACC foe Virginia.
"We're stepping up as a unit and some individuals really are stepping up as you know," head coach John Kerr said. "Andrew Wenger is doing a great job and [Nick] Palodichuk has scored six goals this season as a freshman. Chris Tweed-Kent continues to give defenses a lot of problems. We're solid in the back now and we got our first clean sheet in a while so we feel good about that and we're playing as a collective unit."
Duke had the first scoring opportunity of the evening when freshman Andrew Morales took a chance from 18 yards out. He sent an incredible bending shot to right upper 90, but the strike rose just enough and hit the crossbar to deny the rookie his first collegiate goal.
The Blue Devils continue to pressure Davidson, but could not come up with that final pass to get the first goal of the game.
The Wildcats had their best chance of the night midway through the half as Garrett Bostwick got loose on the right flank. Wide open, Bostwick received a pass just inside the penalty area and tried to beat Duke goaltender James Belshaw to the far post. The Duke goaltender came off his line just enough to cut off the angle and got down quickly to make the save with his right foot.
Duke maintained control for much of the remainder of the half, but was never able to generate a truly dangerous opportunity. The Blue Devils managed 13 shots overall, but just one on goal in the opening 45 minutes.
The Blue Devils got the lead they were searching for 2:52 into the second stanza as Wenger's defensive pressure paid off. Morales found Wenger with a nice little pass to start, but that got broken up. Wenger stayed with the play and got the ball back and was able to beat Chip Sanders one-on-one. Sanders got a hand on the ball, but Wenger took advantage of the half chance and turned and snuck the shot just past a Davidson defender for the 1-0 lead.
Wenger has scored in six straight games and in eight of Duke's 11 games this season. In the six-game stretch, the native of Lititz, Pa., has 24 points.
Duke had the better of play for much of the second half, but a tough Davidson defense kept the Blue Devils from extending the lead. The Wildcats started to gain momentum in the final 15 minutes of the game as they generated some dangerous chances. Duke's backline remained calm and came up with well-time tackles in holding the Wildcats to just four shots in the half and only one on goal.
The Blue Devils outshot Davidson 22-9 for the game and had six on goal. Duke also earned 13 corner kicks in the 90-minute outing, tying the season-high.
In goal, Duke's Belshaw had three saves and registered his second shutout of the season. Sanders finished with five saves on the night.
Duke resumes ACC play on Oct. 7, hosting rival NC State at 7 p.m. The game will be streamed live on GoDuke.com for those unable to make it to Koskinen Stadium.
