DURHAM, N.C. - Duke shut down one of the nation's most potent offenses in front of a season record crowd of 3,671 and defeated North Carolina 3-0 (25-18, 27-25, 25-22) on Wednesday evening in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
The Blue Devils (13-6, 7-3 ACC) became only the third team to sweep North Carolina this season and the second ACC squad to get a win over the second-place Tar Heels. The win featured Duke's best offensive effort of the season in a nationally televised broadcast that aired on ESPNU.
Sophia Dunworth knocked down a team-high 15 kills on a .270 hitting percentage for Duke, and right side hitter Amanda Robertson recorded 11 kills with just one attack error. The Blue Devils hit .356 with 51 kills and only nine attack errors in their fourth consecutive sweep of North Carolina.
All-American setter Kellie Catanach dished out 39 assists and recorded five kills of her own to lead the Blue Devils to their 19th straight ACC victory inside Cameron Indoor Stadium. The .356 hitting percentage was Duke's second highest of the season and the team's best mark in ACC play.
Duke stifled a North Carolina offense that ranked second in the country in kills per set, third in assists per set and 19th in hitting percentage. The Tar Heels managed just a .226 hitting percentage and had only outside hitter Chaniel Nelson hit over .250. Nelson led the team with 14 kills and a .281 hitting percentage, but the rest of the Tar Heel lineup hit just .211.
Keying Duke's strong defensive effort was All-ACC libero Ali McCurdy, who amassed 20 digs in just three sets. The 5-7 sophomore, who leads the ACC in digs, had eight pickups in game two and 10 more in game three. Dunworth also put up a strong defensive effort with 15 digs for her third double-double. Over her last four matches, Dunworth is averaging 3.89 digs per set and is on pace to set a career high in that category.
Middle blocker Chelsea Cook spearheaded a strong Duke front, putting back a team-high four blocks. Right side hitter Amanda Robertson and Gray also had three blocks apiece.
Duke hit .500 in the first set, .289 in game two and .312 in the finale. Duke made no more than four attack errors in any set. Freshman Jeme Obeime gave the Tar Heels all they could handle over the final two games, recording six of her seven kills during that span while hitting .667 without an attack error.
The Blue Devils will continue their in-state rivalry weekend on Friday with a 7 p.m. matchup against NC State in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
