PHILADELPHIA – The Duke men's fencing team opened the 2011 season by winning four of its five matches at the Philadelphia Invitational in Hutchinson Gym on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania.
The Blue Devils, led by two 9-0 shutouts from the epee squad, defeated Haverford 21-6, Drew 23-4, Sacred Heart 24-3 and NJIT 25-2. The epees, led by juniors Jonathan Parker and Tristan Jones and freshman Dylan Nollner, blanked Drew and NJIT 9-0 on the way to the meet's best combined epee record of the day at 38-7.
All three of Duke's weapons went 4-1 for the round-robin tournament. The Blue Devil epees took top honors for the team with a combined 38 individual wins while the sabers posted a 34-11 mark and the foils finished 33-12.
Duke's lone loss was a narrow 15-12 defeat at the hands of site host Penn which finished 6-0. In the second-round matchup, Penn won all three weapons 5-4 to edge Duke in the narrowest match of the day.
The Philadelphia Invitational will continue on Sunday with the women's bracket on the campus of Temple University.
