CHICAGO, Ill. – Former Duke standout Patrick Mannelly will etch his name into the Chicago Bears' record book tonight by playing in his franchise-record 192nd game. The Bears host the Green Bay Packers at Soldier Field this evening at 8:30 p.m. on ESPN.
A sixth round pick in 1996, Mannelly has missed just three games in 13 years with Chicago, and has seen action in 123 straight contests. Only seven active NFL players have played in more games than Mannelly including Jason Hanson (Detroit; 290), David Binn (San Diego; 257), John Kasey (Carolina; 208), Ray Lewis (Baltimore; 197), Ronde Barber (Tampa Bay; 196) and Peyton Manning (Indianapolis; 195).
"You get here, drafted as a rookie, and you're just trying to make the team the first year," the 6-foot-5, 265-pound Mannelly told the Daily Herald. "I was hoping for maybe just a little bit of a head start in life. Maybe get a year or two in and figure out what I was going to do after that, but 13 years later to still be doing this, I've been very fortunate."
Mannelly will break Steve McMichael's club record of 191 games played.
A native of Marietta, Ga., Mannelly hasn't missed a game in eight seasons. In 2001, he sat out one contest with a sprained ankle, and one season later missed two due to a sprained knee.
At Duke, Mannelly majored in history and lettered four seasons (1993-94-95-97) on the gridiron.
"One reason I chose Duke was hopefully to get a good education and open up some doors," Mannelly said. "One door that opened was to go work for Morgan Stanley, so I thought maybe I'd be trading stocks or doing something like that, but I like this job a lot better."
