BRYAN, Texas - The preseason fifth-ranked Duke women's golf team opened its 2010-11 campaign on Monday at the NCAA Fall Preview with a five-over-par, 293, at the 6,271-Yard, Par 72 Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas.
As a team, Duke sits tied for sixth with a 293, while Georgia posted a course record 277 to take the round one lead. Vanderbilt (284), Alabama (286), LSU (287), Southern California (289), Duke (293), UCLA (293), Tulane (294), Wake Forest (296) and Auburn (296) round out the top 10. The Blue Devils opened their round on hole No. 10 on Monday.
Leading the Blue Devils on Monday was sophomore Courtney Ellenbogen with a two-under-par, 70. A product of Blacksburg, Va., Ellenbogen carded a team-best five birdies on the day, which came during a span of nine holes. Two of her birdies came on par fives as she hit wedges to within a couple of feet for easy putts. Ellenbogen hit 12 fairways, 12 greens and had 28 putts on the day.
Alabama's Brooke Pancake took the opening round lead with a course-record 65, which was seven-under-par. Marina Alex of Vanderbilt, Emilie Burger of Georgia and Lee Lopez of UCLA are tied for second overall. Ellenbogen is tied for ninth with four other golfers and five shots off the lead.
Duke sophomore Lindy Duncan and freshman Alejandra Cangrejo each posted rounds of two-over-par 74 on day one and are tied for 30th. Duncan, who is out of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., opened with a par on the 10th hole and then registered her first of two birdies on the day. She headed into her 16th hole of the round, which was hole No. 7, at even par but Duncan suffered a double-bogey to drop to two-over-par. Duncan totaled 12 greens in regulation and hit 12 fairways, while totaling 32 putts in her round.
Playing in her first collegiate tournament, Cangrejo opened her morning at two-under-par through five holes, but suffered two bogeys, one double-bogey and one birdie over her next four holes to make the turn at one-over-par, 37. A native of Bogota, Columbia, Cangrejo finished the round with six pars, two bogeys and one birdie on the par four ninth hole.
Senior Kim Donovan had a solid start to her day with a birdie on No. 11 and made the turn at even par, 36, after suffering a bogey on the 17th hole. Donovan, who is from Hopkinton, Mass., notched five straight pars to start her back nine that included a key 12-foot par putt on No. 5. She was unlucky on No. 6 as she plugged a ball in the bunker and made double-bogey. Donovan finished off the day with two pars and a bogey on the eighth hole for a 75. She hit 13 greens, 12 fairways and had 33 putts over her 18 holes.
Freshman Laetitia Beck started her collegiate career with eight consecutive pars, but struggled to complete her final 10 holes. A Caesarea, Israel, product, Beck had bogeys on No. 3, No. 8 and No. 9 along with a double-bogey on the sixth hole to finish off her day without a birdie.
Duke will tee off in the second round beginning at 8:45 a.m., with Southern California and LSU.
