BRYAN, Texas - Led by a bogey-free six-under-par, 66, Duke University sophomore Lindy Duncan vaulted into tie for fourth at the NCAA Fall Preview on Tuesday, which is being played at the 6,271-yard, par 72 Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas.
Duncan, who is a native of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., netted birdies on No. 5 and No. 8 as she made the turn at two-under-par. An All-America selection as a freshman, Duncan then carded birdies on the back nine on No. 11, No. 13, No. 15 and No. 18 to close with a six-under-par. She notched 16 greens-in-regulation, hit 12 fairways and had 28 putts on the day.
"Everything was on and I was really confident in all parts of my game," said Duncan. "Yesterday I was pretty disappointed. I practiced really hard afterwards to figure a few things out. It was really important. I went out there and did it today so that was really cool. Today was kind of like my day today and it was really fun. I am definitely going to enjoy it, but I have to work again tomorrow and it isn't going to be easy."
The round of 66 is the lowest 18-hole ledger since 2010 graduate Alison Whitaker posted a 65 at the UCF Challenge on March 9, 2008. Duncan's previous lowest round was a 67 last year at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge.
"She looked really solid out there," commented Head Coach Dan Brooks on Duncan's play. "I told her if she had 20 more holes she probably would have been 12-under-par. It was just really solid golf. It looked like it was easy."
As a team, Duke remains tied for sixth with UCLA with rounds of 293 and 287 for a total of 580. The Blue Devils improved six shots from the day before with their one-under-par score on Tuesday. Alabama leads the action with a 10-under-par, 566. LSU (570), Southern California (571), Georgia (574), Vanderbilt (574), Duke (580), UCLA (580), Tulane (590), Virginia (591) and Purdue (593) round out the top 10.
"Today I thought it was a little bit better day and obviously the numbers show it," said Brooks. "Jeanne Cho, my assistant [coach] calculated we were a lot better with bogeys on par fives -- reducing those from seven to two as a team -- and then our double-bogeys yesterday we had four and today we had two. Right there is a lot of improvement on some really basic things. You have to get rid of bogeys on par fives and you have to get rid of the doubles."
Coming off a 78 in Monday's first round, freshman Laetitia Beck totaled an even-par, 72, on day two. A product of Caesarea, Israel, Beck notched five birdies over her 18 holes and was two-under-par going into the 362-yard, par four 17th before suffering a double-bogey. She closed her day with a par on No. 18. Beck holds a 36-hole total of 150 and is tied for 48th.
Fellow freshman Alejandra Cangrejo registered her second straight round of 74 on Tuesday highlighted by back-to-back birdies on No. 16 and No. 17. Cangrejo, who is from Bogota, Columbia, had a disastrous start with bogeys on the first and second holes and a double-bogey on No. 3. She settled down and notched 12 straight pars from holes four through 15. Cangrejo is tied for 34th with a 148.
"Aleja's round got away from her early and then she brought it back," commented Brooks. "She was actually four-over after three holes so she had all pars and birdied two out of the last three holes coming in."
Totaling her second straight round of 75 was senior Kim Donovan, who is a native of Hopkinton, Mass. Donovan hit 12 greens, 11 fairways and totaled 31 putts on Tuesday as she had one birdie. Her lone birdie came on the 145-yard, par three 16th as she hit a seven-iron that lipped out for a hole-in-one chance before tapping in for two. Donovan also had key sand saves on the sixth and 11th holes, while entering the final round tied for 48th with a 150.
After collecting Duke's best 18-hole score on Monday, freshman Courtney Ellenbogen struggled with an 80 on day two and is now tied for 48th with a 150. Ellenbogen, who is from Blacksburg, Va., had a one-over-par, 37, on the front nine but struggled on the back with seven bogeys and two pars.
"The course isn't playing real hard because there hasn't been any wind and has been real hot," said Brooks. "I think these greens, from what I understand, can be really firm and they are not as firm as they can be because of the rain. They are firm but not ridiculously firm. It is a tough course and a good course for nationals, especially in May we will probably get some wind. I think wind will really change this golf course. There are a lot of hazards on it and the greens are well-bunkered."
Duke will tee off in the final round on Wednesday beginning at 8:33 along with Georgia and Vanderbilt.
