Sarmiento Earns First Start
Redshirt freshman defensive lineman Sydney Sarmiento picked up his first collegiate start at defensive tackle. Sarmiento played in his second career game with the Blue Devils.
Blue Devils Score 48 Points
The 48 points are the second most under head coach David Cutcliffe with a 49-point performance against N.C. State last year the only game with more. It is the fifth time under Cutcliffe Duke has scored 40 or more points and second straight this season.
Most Points In A Loss
The 48 points are the most scored in school history in a loss. The previous high was 45 points against N.C. State in 1987. It is the fifth time the Blue Devils have scored 40 or more points in a loss.
Over 400 Yards Of Total Offense
For the second straight week, Duke recorded over 400 yards of total offense, finishing with 487 against Wake Forest. In two games this season, Duke is averaging 514.5 yards per game. It is the second straight game Duke has passed for at least 350 yards while they have rushed for over 100 yards in both contests.
Scoring In the Redzone
Duke has converted all 10 of its trips into the red zone this season. The Blue Devils were 4-of-4 today and 6-of-6 last week against Elon. Duke scored three touchdowns and added one field goal in its four red zone appearances in this game.
Renfree Passes For Career Highs
Redshirt sophomore quarterback Sean Renfree passed for career highs of 358 yards and four touchdowns. His 358 yards passed his total of 350 last week while his four touchdowns were two more than his previous high.
Four Touchdowns Tie For Third In Single Game
Renfree's four touchdowns are tied for third most in a single game in school history. It is the 16th time in school history a Duke quarterback has thrown four or more touchdown passes.
Multi-Touchdown Game For Renfree
Renfree threw a career-high three touchdown passes, giving him two or more for the second straight game. He now has three career games with two or more TD tosses and has recorded nine career touchdown throws.
Renfree Completes First Nine Passes
Renfree completed his first nine pass attempts of the game for 86 yards and one touchdown. With completions on his final five attempts against Elon, he extended his streak to 14 straight completions. His first incompletion came on a dropped ball that resulted in an interception. He had 48 straight pass attempts without an interception to start the season.
Connette Scores First Touchdown
True freshman quarterback Brandon Connette broke a tackle and found the endzone on a four-yard carry on Duke's opening drive of the game for his first career touchdown. Connette had three carries for 14 yards on the drive, including a six-yard rush for a third down conversion.
Scott Breaks For 63-Yard Touchdown
Sophomore running back Desmond Scott scored on a 63-yard touchdown run in the second quarter for his second touchdown of the season and third of his career.
Scott Notches 100-Yard Rushing Performance
Scott went over the 100-yard mark in the first half with his long touchdown run. He had 108 yards on seven carries in the first half as he recorded his second career 100-yard game. He had 100 yards on 16 attempts against N.C. Central last season in his first collegiate game. For the game he finished with 11 carries for 122 yards and one touchdown.
Vernon Posts Career High
Sophomore wide receiver Conner Vernon recorded a career-high 181 receiving yards and also set a career best with two touchdown catches. Vernon's previous best was 129 yards last week against Elon and he has had three games with one touchdown. In the two games this season he is averaging nine receptions and 155 yards per game.
Back-to-Back 100-Yard Games
Vernon went over 100 receiving yards for the second straight game to start the season and now has five career 100-yard receiving contests to rank tied for sixth on Duke's career list. In both games this season, Vernon tallied over 100 yards in the first half and finished the game with eight receptions for 181 yards and two touchdowns.
Vernon Scores Two Long Touchdowns
Vernon caught touchdown passes of 70 and 51 yards from Renfree for his first two touchdowns of the season. He now has five career touchdown catches. The 70-yard play was the longest of the season to date and Vernon's second longest career grab. He had a 74-yard catch against Virginia Tech last season.
Kelly and Vernon Go Over 1,000 Career Yards
Senior wide receiver Austin Kelly and Vernon each went over 1,000 career receiving yards, giving Duke 31 players all-time with at least 1,000 yards. Kelly finished the game with 10 catches for 73 yards and one touchdown to give him 1,053 career yards. Vernon now has 1,055 career yards after his 181-yard performance.
Kelly Records Career High
The 10 receptions for Kelly are a career high. His previous best was nine catches for 67 yards against Maryland last season.
Kelly Finds Endzone Before Halftime
Kelly scored on a 13-yard throw from Renfree with under one minute to play in the first half. Kelly tallied his sixth career touchdown grab and first of the season.
Helfet Catches Touchdown Pass On Third Down
Junior college transfer tight end Cooper Helfet's first catch as a Blue Devil came on third down and goal from the nine-yard line for a touchdown from Sean Renfree.
Rwabukamba Stops Drive With Interception
Redshirt senior cornerback Chris Rwabukamba intercepted a Ted Stachitas pass on third down and eight from the Duke 24-yard line to end a Wake Forest drive. The interception was the second of Rwabukamba's career. His first came at the one-yard line late in the fourth quarter to seal a win at Vanderbilt in 2008.
Cockrell Gets First Interception
Redshirt freshman Ross Cockrell tallied his first career interception in the third quarter. Duke now has four interceptions in two games after recording a total of eight in 12 games last season.
10 Tackles For Cockrell
Cockrell finished the game with a team-high tackles, giving him 14 in his first two collegiate games.
Daniels Racks Up Numbers
Junior safety Matt Daniels was second on the team with nine tackles, including a team-high two stops behind the line of scrimmage. He also had two pass breakups to lead the defense. Prior to today's game he had three career tackles for loss.
Snyderwine Makes Two Field Goals
Junior kicker Will Snyderwine made field goals of 46 and 38 yards to give him 21 career made field goals. He moves into a tie with Vince Fusco for eighth place on Duke's career field goals list. Snyderwine has made 21-of-25 career attempts.
Snyderwine Moves Up Consecutive PAT List
Snyderwine made all six of his PAT attempts to give him 35 consecutive made PATs. His 35 straight ties Tom Cochran (1983-85) for sixth most in school history.
King Takes Over As Punter
Junior walk-on Alex King took over as Duke's punter in the second half and booted two punts of 50 or more yards while averaging 48.8 yards per punt on four attempts. Two of his four kicks were placed inside the 20-yard line.
