Duncan & Ellenbogen Open Play at the U.S. Amateur

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Duke University's Lindy Duncan and Courtney Ellenbogen opened play at the 2010 U.S. Women's Amateur on Monday at the Par 72, 6,559-Yard Charlotte Country Club in Charlotte, N.C. Duncan carded a 75, while Ellenbogen fired a 77 on day one.

Duncan, who was the 2010 ACC Player and Rookie of the Year, is tied for 56th with a three-over-par, 75, after carding three birdies on the day. A product of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Duncan opened with three straight pars before notching a birdie on No. 4. She went on to make bogeys on the next two holes before getting her score back to even par with a birdie on No. 7.

She closed the front nine with a bogey on the eighth hole and a par on No. 9 to make the turn at one-over-par, 38. On the back, Duncan notched one birdie on No. 17 to go along with a double-bogey on the 11th, a bogey on No. 18 and six pars.

Ellenbogen, who is from Blacksburg, Va., is tied for 89th after posting four birdies and nine bogeys to go along with five pars. On the day, she notched birdies on No. 6, No. 7, No. 14 and No. 17.

Leading the action through the first 18 holes of stroke play qualifying is Rachel Rohanna, who carded a seven-under-par, 65. Brooke Pancake is second with a four-under-par, 68.

After a second day of stroke play Tuesday, the U.S. Women's Amateur field will be reduced to 64 players for match play. The first round of match play is scheduled for Wednesday, the second and third rounds will be played Thursday, the quarterfinal matches will be played Friday, the semifinal matches are on Saturday and the 36-hole championship final will be played Sunday.

The U.S. Women's Amateur is one of 13 championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
