DURHAM, N.C. - Duke women's lacrosse head coach Kerstin Kimel has announced the addition of eight newcomers - Jackie Klauberg, Maddy Morrissey, Sydney Peterson, Molly Quirke, Sophia Sourlis, Tara Stokes, Emma Tucci and Taylor Virden - to the Blue Devils' 2011 roster. The diverse group of newcomers includes players from Connecticut, Maryland, Illinois, Pennsylvania and New York.
"Our staff and returning players are excited and proud to welcome the seven members of the Class of 2014 into our Duke Lacrosse family," Kimel said. "This group represents an incredible mix of talented students, athletes, leaders and lacrosse players who possess a tremendous work ethic, competitive spirit and drive to be the best on and off the field. They will be outstanding additions to our program and we look forward to their arrival in Durham later this month."
Maddy Morrissey comes to Duke from Skaneateles High School in Skaneateles, N.Y., where she garnered All-America, Academic All-America, All-Central New York and all-league accolades. Morrissey racked up 130 goals, 56 assists, 208 ground balls and 153 draw controls from the midfield during her high school career.
"Maddy is a tireless competitor who possesses tremendous speed, quickness and overall athletic ability. While she has a great offensive skill set, her high school team used her as more of a two-way midfielder in her senior season and this experience will no doubt serve her well as she transitions to the college game. We hope to use her in the same capacity here and I have no doubt she will thrive in this role here at Duke."
Sydney Peterson, a native of Towson Maryland, joins the Blue Devils after completing her high school career at Notre Dame Prep, where she totaled 70 goals and 15 assists as a senior. In addition, she played six seasons with the SkyWalkers 2010 Blue Team. While at Notre Dame, Peterson also lettered four years in field hockey, earning IAAM All-Star, All-Baltimore County and All-Metro honors.
"Sydney comes to us from a great high school program where she was a significant contributor to her team's success over the last two seasons. She has a great stick along with speed and vision that will allow her to evolve into a great offensive threat in our system. Attending Duke and being part of our lacrosse program has been a dream for Syd and we are thrilled that this has become a reality for her."
Molly Quirke will join the Duke midfield contingent after starting four seasons at New Trier High School. The Wilmette, Ill., native earned USL All-America and Academic All-America honors in both 2009 and 2010, while also serving as team captain her senior year. An all-conference and all-state pick throughout her career, Quirke also lettered in basketball.
"Molly is one of the most well-rounded players in the class. Her size, combined with speed, footwork, stick skills and a tremendous game sense that has evolved from her basketball background make her an ideal candidate for our midfield. We are looking forward to integrating her into the unit and feel confident she will thrive in our system."
A native of Timonium, Md., Sophia Sourlis lettered two seasons at The Bryn Mawr School before joining the Blue Devil midfield. Sourlis played club lacrosse for the 2010 Baltimore Ravens Women's Club Lacrosse Team, while also lettering in soccer at The Bryn Mawr School.
"We are very excited to welcome Sophia into our program. She has a great multi-sport background which, combined with her speed and quickness, will make her a great addition to our defensive unit."
Tara Stokes from Gladwyne, Pa., will help out Duke's midfield and defense after starting four seasons at The Shipley School. Stokes served as team captain for two seasons, while also garnering team MVP, All-Main Line and all-league accolades during her career. In addition, Stokes lettered in both soccer and squash, earning all-league and All-Main Line honors in soccer and All-Main Line and team MVP acknowledgement in squash.
"Tara is a solid defender who possesses great speed, footwork and defensive instincts. She was an 'under the radar' type of prospect who I think will develop into a great collegiate defender. Our staff is looking forward to developing Tara's natural talents and helping to integrate her into our defensive system."
Hailing from Rye, N.Y., Emma Tucci is a two-time USL All-America choice out of Rye High School. She served as team captain her senior season in addition to earning USL Academic All-America recognition in 2009 and 2010. Tucci also lettered in field hockey while at Rye.
"Emma comes to us with a solid and well-rounded midfield background from her high school and club team experiences. She has great size, endurance and versatility. We are excited to work with her and see how we can utilize her left-handedness in our system to compliment both our offensive and defensive units."
Taylor Virden will join the Duke defensive unit in 2011. Virden, a native of Ellicott City, Md., was a four-year starter at McDonough School, serving as team captain her senior season. She was a two-time all-county and All-Metro pick in addition to earning IAAM All-Star and honorable mention All-America honors. Virden led McDonough to consecutive IAAM 'A' Championships and was named to the 2010 All-Tewaaraton High School Team. In addition, she lettered in both basketball and soccer.
"Taylor is an exceptional multi-sport athlete from the Baltimore area. She is a dynamic and explosive defender who has tremendous game sense, speed and defensive skill set. This combined with a great work ethic and outstanding competitive spirit will help her transition quickly into our defensive unit."
In addition to the seven freshmen, Duke also welcomes sophomore transfer Jackie Klauberg, sister of Devil senior Christie Klauberg. Klauberg played her freshman season at Princeton University, where she appeared in 10 games totaling seven goals and three assists.
"We are excited to welcome our program's first transfer student in Jackie Klauberg to our program. Jackie was a top prospect coming out of high school who has great size, speed and stick handling abilities. We look forward to continuing her development at both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball while incorporating her into our midfield unit. I know she is looking forward to arriving in August and lining up on the field with her sister Christie this fall."
Last season, the Blue Devils accumulated a 14-6 overall record (2-3) while making the program's 13th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.
