CATONSVILLE, Md. - Current Duke women's lacrosse student-athlete Sarah Bullard and Blue Devil alumnae Caroline Cryer and Megan Huether have been named to the 36-member U.S. National Women's Lacrosse Team as announced by US Lacrosse.
Bullard, Cryer and Huether were selected from a pool of more than 80 players after three days of tryouts on the campus of UMBC.
"What we wanted to accomplish was to gather 36 players that we felt made up the best group as opposed to looking at the most individual talent," Team USA and Georgetown coach Ricky Fried said. "Who played well together, worked well and competed on a consistent basis. It was a competitive tryout, the most competitive I've seen in my four years here. We had some hard decisions to make, in a good way, and we feel lucky to have the group that we have for this year."
Thirteen members of the team were on the 2009 U.S. World Cup championship team, including Duke's Bullard, Cryer and Huether. They and the others selected Sunday are to be part of the core group that represents the U.S. at the 2013 World Cup.
Bullard, an All-America, All-ACC and all-region pick in 2010, will return to Duke in the fall for her senior season with the Blue Devils after leading the team to a 14-6 record last season. Cryer ('09) ended her collegiate career with 81 assists and 169 goals to rank second and third, respectively, in the Duke record books. Goalie Huether ('06) is Duke's all-time leader in saves (646) and minutes (4505) and ranks third in save percentage (.528).
The national team competes for the first time on Columbus Day at the annual US Lacrosse Stars and Stripes event in Boston.
