DURHAM, N.C. - The 2010 Duke University women's lacrosse team closed out the season with a 14-6 overall record and a 2-3 mark in ACC play. Included in that record were eight wins over ranked opponents as Duke picked up top-20 victories over No. 9 Vanderbilt, No. 20 William and Mary, No. 7 Princeton, No. 7 Boston University, No. 5 Georgetown and No. 16 Boston College. The Blue Devils reached the NCAA Tournament for the 13th consecutive season in 2010, registering a come-from-behind victory over Vanderbilt before falling to five-time defending national champion Northwestern in the second round.
Final Rankings
Duke finished the year ranked No. 5 in the nation by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) and No. 6 by Inside Lacrosse. The Blue Devils also ended the 2009 season ranked fifth in the country.
Leading the Way
Duke's tri-captains - Sarah Bullard, Lindsay Gilbride and Danielle Kachulis - all earned All-America status for their play in 2010 while providing valuable leadership for the Blue Devils.
Bullard was one of Duke's most consistent players in 2010, leading the team with 48 goals and 27 caused turnovers. For her efforts, she was named to first team IWLCA All-America, first team IWLCA All-South and All-ACC in addition to earning a place on the ACC All-Tournament team, the All-ACC Academic Team and ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District III distinction.
Gilbride completed a stellar career with the Blue Devils in 2010 with her second All-America honors. The senior tallied 47 goals to go along with a career-high 23 assists in her final season as the Alexandria, Va., native ends her career sixth at Duke in career goals (159) and points (212). Gilbride was also an All-America selection by both WomensLacrosse.com and WomensLax.com in addition to earning All-ACC, All-ACC Academic and All-South accolades.
Defensive specialist Kachulis earned her first All-America accolades this past season. The Parker, Colo., native ranked third on the team in both ground balls (35) and caused turnovers (23), both career highs, while also chipping in eight goals and five assists. She was also a second team All-South and All-ACC Academic selection.
Helping Hand
Junior Christie Kaestner earned her first career IWLCA All-South Region recognition after leading the Blue Devils in both points (74) and assists (39) for the season. Her 39 assists in 2010 was the second-highest single-season total in Duke history, trailing only Kristen Waagbo's 44 helpers in 2007.
Draw Control
Sophomore Kat Thomas led all Devils with 67 draws in 2010, 40 more than the next closest player. Thomas was named first team all-region and All-ACC in her second season in Durham after more than doubling her goal and point production from her rookie campaign. The Latham, N.Y., native ranked third on the team with 42 goals and fourth on the team with 47 points.
Devilish Defense
Duke led the ACC and ranked in the top-5 in the country in caused turnovers per game, averaging nearly 12 per contest. The Blue Devil defense was the only unit in the ACC to average more than 10 caused turnovers per game. In addition, Duke held 13 opponents to under 10 goals during the season, marking the most games in one year the Devils had limited their opponents to under 10 goals since Duke kept 14 opponents under double figures in 2006.
Non-Conference Domination
Duke posted a 12-2 record in 2010 against non-ACC opponents. The Blue Devils' only two non-conference losses came at the hands of defending national champion Northwestern on April 2nd and May 22nd.
Farewell Seniors
The Blue Devils' six seniors guided the squad to a 58-23 record during their four years at Duke. The group, which includes Christie Barnes, Sara Giedgowd, Lindsay Gilbride, Jillian Heinz, Danielle Kachulis and Betsey Sauer, made two national semifinals and two national quarterfinals while also earning an ACC regular season championship with the Blue Devils.
Post-Season Honors
Three Blue Devil student-athletes were tabbed All-America by the IWLCA, while five earned All-South distinction from the organization. Duke also placed four on the All-ACC squad and a league-leading eight on the All-ACC Academic team.
Duke seniors Lindsay Gilbride and Danielle Kachulis, along with junior Sarah Bullard, were named to the 2010 IWLCA All-America as announced by the organization on May 31. Bullard garnered first team recognition, while Gilbride and Kachulis were named to the second and third team, respectively.
In addition, Christie Kaestner and Kat Thomas joined Bullard, Gilbride and Kachulis in IWLCA All-South Region honors for their play in 2010. Bullard and Gilbride were both named to the first team, while Kachulis, Kaestner and Thomas were named to the second team.
