DURHAM, N.C. - The late Tom Mickle, a 1972 Duke graduate and former athletic department administrator, was honored this past weekend at the National Football Foundation's Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival in South Bend, Ind. He was posthumously presented the Bert McGrane Award from the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), recognizing a lifetime of service to sportswriters and the craft.
Mickle's widow, Jill, accepted the award.
A native of Media, Pa., Mickle graduated from Duke in 1972 with a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering. He joined his alma mater's athletic department following graduation, and was named the school's Sports Information Director on July 1, 1976. On January 1, 1986, Mickle became Duke's Director of Sports Services and held that position until May of 1989 when he was named an Assistant Commissioner and Director of the Service Bureau at the Atlantic Coast Conference office in Greensboro.
Mickle was later promoted to Associate Commissioner of the ACC and worked in the league office until January 2, 2002 when he was named the Executive Director of Florida Citrus Sports in Orlando. He passed away in April of 2006.
The Bert McGrane award is named after the Des Moines, Iowa, writer who was the executive secretary of the FWAA from the early 1940s until 1973.
