DURHAM, N.C. - First team All-South Region selections Sarah Bullard and Lindsay Gilbride headline a list of five Duke women's lacrosse player named all-region as announced by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Friday morning. The Devils' Danielle Kachulis, Christie Kaestner and Kat Thomas were named to the all-region second team.
Junior midfielder Bullard was one of Duke's most consistent players in 2010, leading the team with 48 goals and 27 caused turnovers. A Tewaaraton Trophy candidate, the Needham, Mass., native is making her second appearance on the Southeast Region first team after earning All-ACC and conference All-Tournament team honors earlier this season.
Senior attacker Gilbride ended a stellar four years with the Devils, tallying 47 goals and a career-best 23 assists this season. The Alexandria, Va., native ranks sixth at Duke in all-time goals (159) and points (212) and is just the seventh Blue Devil to total over 200 points in her career. A two-time All-ACC honoree, Gilbride was named to the all-region second team in 2009.
Kachulis, a senior defensive specialist, is also making her second appearance on the all-region squad. The Parker, Colo., native ranks third on the team in both ground balls (35) and caused turnovers (23), both career highs, while chipping in eight goals and five assists for the season as well.
After leading the Blue Devils in both points (74) and assists (39), Kaestner earned her first career all-region recognition. A junior on the Duke attack, Kaestner's 39 assists in 2010 is the second-highest single-season total in Duke history, trailing only Kristen Waagbo's 44 helpers in 2007.
Sophomore midfielder Thomas makes her first appearance on the all-region team after more than doubling her goal and point production from her rookie season. The Latham, N.Y., native ranked third on the team with 42 goals and fourth on the squad with 47 points. In addition, she led the Blue Devils with 67 draws, 40 more than Duke's next closest player.
Each athlete named to the all-region squad is now eligible for inclusion on the IWLCA All-America teams, which will be announced on Monday, May 31. The IWLCA will honor the National All-Americans at the IWLCA All-American banquet on June 12, 2010 at the Crowne Plaza Valley Forge in King of Prussia, Pa.
