DURHAM, N.C. - The seventh-seed Duke women's lacrosse team is set to take on No. 2 seed Northwestern Saturday, May 22 at 2 p.m. in the quarterfinal round of the 2010 NCAA Championships. The Blue Devils are attempting to make their fifth semifinal appearance in the past six seasons, while the Wildcats are in search of their sixth consecutive national championship.
Duke (14-5, 2-3 ACC) advanced to the quarterfinal round with a 16-15 victory over Vanderbilt at home on Sunday, May 16. The Devils trailed by two with under eight minutes to play, but rallied for three unanswered goals, including Lindsay Gilbride's gamewinner with one second remaining on the clock, for the come-from-behind victory. Gilbride led all scorers on the day with five goals and an assist. Christie Kaestner totaled two goals and three assists, Sarah Bullard had three goals and an assist and Kat Thomas netted three goals to pace the attack.
The Blue Devils faced Northwestern (18-1, 5-0 ALC) earlier this season, falling 19-14 to the then-No. 1 ranked Wildcats at Koskinen Stadium on April 3. Duke is 2-6 all-time against Northwestern and has dropped its last four meetings to the Wildcats. The Devils last defeated Northwestern on April 7, 2006, taking a 16-10 decision from the Wildcats in Durham.
