DURHAM, N.C. – Duke University senior
Alison Whitaker has been selected by Golf Australia to participate in the 2010 World Amateur Team Championships in Argentina from Oct. 16-31 at the Buenos Aires Golf Club and Olivos Golf Club.
Along with Whitaker, the women's team will be comprised of Julia Boland (NSW), Stacey Keating (VIC) and Justine Lee (NSW) and led by Head Coach Dennise Hutton.
A native of Melbourne, Australia, Whitaker is a two-time Victoria Golf Club Champion in Australia and a two-time All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) selection at Duke. As a freshman, she guided Duke to the NCAA Championship and has led the Blue Devils to two ACC Championships over her four years. Last month, Whitaker competed in the Handa Australian Open where she placed 21st overall with rounds of 70, 74, 78 and 74.
Australia hosted the last World Amateur Team Championships in 2008 at Royal Adelaide Golf Club and The Grange Golf Club. In the Espirito Santo Trophy, the Australian women's team finished tied for 15th. The Australian women's team last won the Espirito Santo Trophy in 2002 in a team that included Katherine Hull, Lindsey Wright and Vicky Thomas.
Organized by the International Golf Federation, teams of men and women come from all over the world to compete for the Eisenhower Trophy (men) and Espirito Santo Trophy (women) within three different zones: Asia Pacific, America and Europe & Africa. Players must be amateur golfers and follow the rules of The R&A or United States Golf Association.
