PALOS VERDES, Calif. - After opening the spring in second place in Monday's first round of the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge Tournament, the fifth-ranked Duke women's golf team struggled late in the second round on Tuesday as the Blue Devils dropped to tied for fifth place with a 36-hole total of 597.
Southern California continues to lead the tournament with a two-day total of 580, while Pepperdine (582), Denver (594), UCLA (595), Ohio State (597), Duke (597), Arizona State (598), Wake Forest (599), TCU (609) and California (609) rounded out the top 11 teams. The challenge is being played at the 5,912-yard, Par 71 Palos Verdes Golf Club in Palos Verdes, Calif.
"It wasn't a good day for the Blue Devils," said Duke Head Coach Dan Brooks. "We were doing ok at the start and we lost a bunch at the end -- it leaked away. We were not driving it that well and we were not putting it that well. It was just an off day."
Duke turned in a round of 305 on Tuesday, after totaling a 292 a day before. With one hole remaining in the second round, the Blue Devils had to wait out a 45-minute rain delay. More rain is expected overnight and on Wednesday, which could hinder the third and final round.
"It is not an easy golf course -- it's a challenging course," said Brooks. "That 67 [Lindy Duncan posted the day before], especially coming out of the winter we had was an exceptional round. It is a good golf course. It is in good condition, but it is challenging. It has a lot of difficulty to it."
Entering the second round tied for first with a four-under-par, 67, Duke freshman Lindy Duncan had a solid round of one-over-par through 12 holes but struggled on the 13th through 15th holes with two bogeys and a double-bogey to close with a 76. She sits in sixth place with a 36-hole total of 143, which is five shots off the lead held by Lisa McCloskey of Pepperdine (138).
Freshman Courtney Ellenbogen, who is from Blacksburg, Va., turned in her second straight round of 74 and is tied for 15th overall with a 148. Other Blue Devils in action on Tuesday were Kim Donovan (77), Stacey Kim (78) and Alison Whitaker (82).
The Blue Devils collected only eight birdies on Tuesday, which was six shy of Monday's ledger. Duke also finished with five double-bogeys.
Duke will tee off on Wednesday beginning at 8:00 a.m., with a shotgun start on holes six through nine.
