BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships closed on Saturday at Virginia Tech's Rector Fieldhouse with the Duke men taking eighth place overall with 38.5 points while the women came in fourth with 60 points.
The Florida State men, winners of the last eight conference crowns, successfully defended their 2009 conference championship, and on the women's side, Clemson earned its first ACC title since 1992.
Duke's day began with sophomore Tony Shirk tying for eighth in the men's pole vault, clearing a personal-best 5.00m (14-4.75).
Next up, junior Cory Nanni took third in the men's mile run, completing the race in 4:10.63 to earn six points for the Blue Devils. In the women's mile, junior Kristina Krasich took seventh in a personal-best 4:51.77, also the fastest time by a Blue Devil this season. Senior Emily Sherrard took ninth place in 4:55.40.
Duke scored another six points in the men's 800m as junior Sean-Pat Oswald came in third with a time of 1:52.24. For the women, three Blue Devils finished in the top eight with junior Devotia Moore leading the way in third place. The Queens, N.Y., native clocked 2:08.33 and was followed closely by teammate sophomore Cydney Ross in fourth place in 2:09.31. Sophomore Leslie Morrison rounded out the Duke scoring contingent, coming in seventh place after posting a 2:13.66 time.
Sophomore James Kostelnik and junior Joshua Lund earned the final points for the Duke men, finishing seventh and eighth, respectively. Kostelnik's time of 8:14.88 is now the fourth fastest in Devil history, while Lund's mark of 8:14.88 is just behind in fifth in the school record books.
In addition, the Duke women claimed three of the top eight spots in the 3,000m run. Freshman Madeline Morgan grabbed third place with a provisional qualifying 9:30.62 and classmate Juliet Bottorff earned fifth place with a 9:36.40 clocking. Sophomore Suejin Ahn ran a 9:45.67 to take the eighth spot in the standings and sophomore Katelyn Bastert finished 10th in 9:48.10.
Up next, the Blue Devils head to South Bend, Ind., to compete in the Notre Dame Last Chance meet from Mar. 5-6 and also will travel to Boston, Mass., for the IC4A/ECAC Championships Mar. 6-7.
