GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Duke recorded the second-lowest team score in the second round of the SunTrust Gator Invitational, firing a 288 (+8) to tie for fifth out of the field of 14 teams after 36-holes of stroke play at the University of Florida's Mark Bostick GC.
The Blue Devils were led by freshman Julian Suri, who carded rounds of 71-70=141 (+1) to enter the final round in a tie for first place. The freshman from St. Augustine, Fla. closed his first round with birdies on No. 17 and No. 18 to help reach one-over-par after 18 holes.
Duke's second round was 12 strokes better than its first 18 holes, which allowed the Blue Devils to gain ground on the field in wet and windy conditions. Heavy rain led to some mud-covered golf balls and made the 6,701-yard course play longer than usual.
"It was a pretty rough start, unfortunately," head coach Jamie Green said. "We had a few too many shots in places where it was tough to score from. Our second round wasn't a great round, but certainly better. Julian [Suri] played solid golf. I was very happy for him and for our team."
Suri had a pair of birdies along with two bogeys in the second round to remain at even par and one-over for the tournament.
"In the first round, I wasn't as consistent with my ball striking, but I scrambled a lot to get up-and-down," Suri said. " In the second round I had more chances for birdies. I stayed patient and kept plugging away."
Freshman Brinson Paolini also began to heat up in the second round, matching Suri's even-par round with a round of 70 of his own. The Virginia Beach, Va. native birdied two par-4 holes to help Duke climb up the leaderboard.
"Brinson was very calm and very steady in the afternoon," Green said. "He hit a lot of fairways and greens to put together solid rounds of golf. "
Sophomore Spencer Anderson and freshman Adam Sumrall also improved their scores in the second round, posting rounds of 73 and 75, respectively.
"Tomorrow, we shouldn't have any rain and hopefully we can put a good round together, Green said. "The guys are looking forward to it."
The Blue Devils will tee off from the No. 1 and No. 10 tees tomorrow, beginning at 8 a.m.
