DURHAM, N.C. - Former Duke women's lacrosse standout Stefanie Sparks has rejoined the program in the fall of 2010 head coach Kerstin Kimel has announced. Sparks will serve as volunteer assistant coach. Working primarily with the defense, the 2005 graduate held a similar position with the Blue Devils from 2005-07.
Sparks returns to Durham after serving as a volunteer assistant coach for the Hoya women's lacrosse team while pursuing a law degree from Georgetown University. The Hoyas posted a 38-19 record with Sparks' assistance and won both the BIG EAST regular season and tournament titles in 2010, marking the first time the program has captured both championships in the same season.
“We are so excited that Stef has rejoined our coaching staff for the 2010-11 school year," head coach Kerstin Kimel said. "Stef is one of our all-time greatest leaders and I could not be more proud that she is back on the sidelines with us this season after spending three seasons with Coach Fried at Georgetown. There is no one who bleeds Duke Blue more than Stef Sparks and I am confident she will have a tremendous impact on our team and student-athletes this year.”
During her time as a volunteer assistant at Duke, the Blue Devils posted a record of 34-7, winning back-to-back ACC regular season titles and appearing in two NCAA national semifinals.
A four-year letterwinner at Duke from 2001-2005, Sparks earned team Rookie of the Year accolades in 2002 and served as team captain her junior and senior seasons. In 2005, she led Duke to both the ACC regular season and tournament championships as the Blue Devils would go on to make the program's second national semifinal appearance. A Workhorse Award winner for three seasons, Sparks also earned the Coaches Award and the Leadership Award, which was renamed the Lonergan-Sparks Leadership Award in her honor.
Sparks graduated from Duke in 2005 with a double major in History and Political Science and completed her law degree from Georgetown in May of 2010. Sparks and her fiancée, Stephen Smith, live in Durham as she currently works as an Associate with Ekstrand & Ekstrand, LLP.
