DURHAM, N.C. - Throughout the fall, senior Christie Kaestner will send blog updates to GoDuke.com, giving fans inside access to the Duke women's lacrosse team. Read her seventh post below for the inside scoop on the team's recent activities.
Cherished readers,
Now how about a recap of the week? So many things happened so I will just go chronologically. On Friday we bussed up to Georgetown for our last fall ball event. I jumped on the bed, called the-now-Mrs. Martindale (formerly Allie Johnson yikes), and freaked out that senior year has smacked me so hard. How did I get so old? We had a beautiful day Saturday with many parents (great burger and fry creations, Mrs. Wenger), outstanding play against great competition, and many sweet treats in preparation for Halloween (Ker made the parents hide the candy; obviously I found the pumpkin stash under a table and ate 17 mini candy bars before the last game, almost throwing up on the field … I don't think Ricky Fried would have liked that on his turf). Jazzed on sugar and pumped for Halloween we boarded the bus home and after a stop at ever-beloved Wawa, we had a terrific night Saturday and prepared for the main event-team Halloween costume competition.
If you pay any attention to Duke Lax at all, it is well known that the annual costume competition at Ker's house is of the utmost importance-bragging rights for an entire year and unconditional ruling for as long as you can draw it out. As the two-time defending champions, the class of 2011 knew we had to go out with a bang. As my father always says, if you can do it, it ain't bragging. Let's just say, we blew it out of the water. We went as Disney villains and absolutely nailed it. Emma Hamm was Cruella DeVille and captured Claire Kimel as a baby Dalmatian; Sarah Bullard WAS the Queen of Hearts and screamed “Off with her head!” directly at Ker; Caroline Spearmen hand sewed eight velcro tentacles to her outfit to absolutely nail Ursula; Virginia Crotty was unrecognizable as the witch from Snow White, tempting everyone with a poison apple; Casey Beyel spray painted her crutches gold as Jafar and still is a celebrity on campus with them; I was Captain Hook and made Mac walk the plank; and finally, Miller Hughes was Maleficent, walking into my apartment and re-creating the single most terrifying villain of my childhood. No lie my heart skipped a beat and I took a step back. We closed out our illustrious career of Care Bears, 1st place Willy Wonka, 1st place Top Ten Solo Artists, and Disney villains with a dynasty left behind. Sorry to brag, but I'm so proud. The freshmen were a gorilla and six bananas, sophomores were a freak show, and the juniors did a great job with cereal box characters. Some highlights: Sarah Kendrick was unrecognizable with her nose; it wasn't until I saw pictures that I figured out it was her; Hannah Fisher had terrific orange eyebrows as the Lucky Charms guy (I wish you left them on); Monica DeMairo was the ringleader of the freaks and made me laugh so hard; and Jen was Squidward from SpongeBob-I honestly didn't even recognize her! Overall, we had a great time, with yummy chili from Ker and an adorable Gisele and Tom Brady (Caroline and Mac).
With running and lifting this week, our bodies are sore, getting stronger, and hating Daddy Howser (even though we love him) as we get into November and prepare for the upcoming season. We are in the always-stressful process of registering for classes next semester, something that always brings out interesting freak-outs in people. Amanda Jones knows every great class at this school and somehow Mollie Mackler is in like six classes already … some people really know the system. It's been a long and exciting week, with a ridiculous weekend coming up! So many visitors are coming (Sarah, Emma, and I have seven, count 'em seven, additional people staying in our apartment) and Duke Athletics are in full swing. If you find yourself in the area, stop by Koskinen Stadium Friday night for men's soccer senior night vs. Wake Forest or football vs. Virginia Saturday in Wallace Wade. It's going to be a great weekend! Thanks for stopping by and stay classy.
Love, Lax, and leaving costume legacies,
- CK7
