DURHAM, N.C. - Duke University had four players register double-digit points en route to an 88-44 victory over Wingate in women's basketball exhibition action this evening at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Junior Kathleen Scheer and senior Krystal Thomas both posted double-doubles for the Blue Devils, while senior Jasmine Thomas led all players with 23 points.
Krystal was outstanding on the glass, pulling down 22 boards to go with her 13 points. Scheer finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds in 31 minutes of action. The Blue Devils shot 42.7 percent overall and forced the Bulldogs into 30 turnovers for the game.
Wingate came out strong, trading baskets with the Blue Devils throughout the first 10 minutes. Holding a narrow 19-15 advantage at the 6:25 mark, Duke put together an 18-4 run over the next five minutes to stretch the lead to 37-19 with just over a minute to play.
The Blue Devil defense keyed the run, forcing eight turnovers in the five-minute span. Jasmine led the way offensively with six of her 16 first-half points. The two squads traded baskets in the final 64 seconds as the Blue Devils took a 39-23 lead into the break. Duke forced 16 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes, registering 18 points off of the Bulldogs' miscues.
Duke's offense started to click in the second half as it scored on six of its first nine possessions to go in front by 23 at 53-30. Behind the rebounding efforts of Krystal, the Blue Devils continued to pull as they ran off a 24-6 run over a span of eight minutes for a commanding 38-point lead with just under five minutes to play. Krystal corralled 14 rebounds in the second half, including six on the offensive glass.
The Blue Devils also dished out 10 assists in the second half compared to the six in the first and shot 45.5 percent in the final 20 minutes. Overall, Duke hit 42.7 percent of its shots and held a 58-30 advantage on the glass. The Bulldogs managed just eight offensive rebounds for the game and knocked down 27.5 percent of their chances from the field.
Duke will play its final exhibition game on Nov. 7, hosting Carson-Newman at 2 p.m., in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils kick off the official season on Nov. 13 against BYU at 7 p.m.
