DURHAM, N.C. -
Throughout the fall, senior Christie Kaestner will send blog updates to GoDuke.com, giving fans inside access to the Duke women's lacrosse team. Read her ninth post below for the inside scoop on the team's recent activities.Muggles,
I'm sure you are not surprised to hear that my entire week (and several other's entire weeks) revolved around the 12:01 showing of part one of the epic finale of the greatest story of my childhood - Harry Potter, and subsequently, the Deathly Hallows.
Now, when I say I am an enormous fan, it turns out I am not quite on the same, should I say … crazy … level as some other people at that theater. Gaiss, Morrissey, Ogle, Maddie, Amanda, Spear (on her 22nd birthday mind you), Virden, Bridget, Krom, Mackler, Virginia and I all represented Duke Lax at Wynnsong Theater with pure excitement. The entire complex was sold out with 14 theaters showing the movie at 12:01. Ogie Fresh, Morrissey and I got there at 10:00 to fight off Patronuses, Bellatrix Lestranges, and Dobbys for first-rate seats. I got asked about a million times if I really played Quidditch (I had on my shirt) to which I replied, 'If only Ker would let me do both.'
I posted up on the first row of seats facing everyone, sized up the crowd in our theater, and handed out Harry Potter silly bandz (compliments of
Emma Hamm) to those I deemed terrific in costume effort. Let's just say one man made his wand out of titanium alloy and a quartz crystal, which he proceeded to “explain” to me how the quartz is a natural conductor and the transcending LED light was a simple mathematical process to figure out (ohhhh Duke engineering affiliates…). Needless to say, he got a silly band.
The opening theme music gave us chills and the 2.5-hour film flew by. I'm formatting a letter to write to Warner Brothers demanding a sooner release date for Deathly Hallows Part 2, ideally sometime next week due to the fact that I know they have already made the second movie and I am good and ready to see it. I'm coming for you, Barry Meyer (CEO of Warner Brothers) don't think I'll wait until July.
I could go on and on about Harry, but sadly I'd be leaving out the many muggles on our team that have clearly missed out on the greatest entertainment of our growing up. Our weekend was uneventful and our week was as well. My weekend was spent watching the Harry Potter marathon on ABC Family (obviously) and, on the field, Howser is starting to, “dig us out of the hole our bodies are in.” We were unsupervised the second half of the week as our coaching staff journeyed to Florida to “recruit and go to a conference” more like, lay on the beach and sip frozen drinks (just kidding, we know it's hard work).
This week marks our last week of lacrosse before Thanksgiving break. It's hard to believe how fast the fall has flown and we only have a few more weeks left in the semester. I know everyone is ready to go home for a few days and recharge before the final push of the semester. Some of us are leaving Friday night for a full week at home, with others sticking it out until as late as Wednesday morning. I personally haven't been home since I left in August, so I am very much looking forward to mommy and daddy, Ash and John, and my kitties, Wilson and Lucy, all under one roof again. Needless to say, my parents are thrilled as well.
Everyone has exciting plans to not only see relatives but also do what we do best: feast. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, Duke Lax is extremely talented at eating. Binge without the purge we like to say, and our favorite holiday is coming up. So to all you parents out there, give huge hugs this week and know we are all itching to see you. To everyone else, Happy Thanksgiving and we at Duke Lax hope you have a great holiday. We are thankful for you, our fabulous fan base. Duke Lax wouldn't be half the program we are without each and every one of you!
Love, Lax, tears for Dobby, and peas in my mashed potatoes,
