Duke Head Coach David CutcliffeOn the final 4th down play of the game:“You're darned if you do, darned if you don't. I always think about the flood and rolling the quarterback out. People have all kinds of equipped coverage for that. We had done that with
Brandon Connette down there previously. We were looking into trying to give
Conner Vernon a chance to make a play. The biggest concern I had when we brought it up was to cut down that side and I guess Kyle [Hill] missed and their guy did a great job backing up. Until you see the tape you don't know for sure, but obviously they jumped up and did a great job batting it down.”
On Boston College's defense:“They're a beast. They're really good and really physical. There's a reason they're ranked where they are. This is not a pretend thing with them. They are the best interior that we've seen and we knew that going in.”
On the game:“This game played about like I thought. We didn't do the fundamental things. You got to win tough ball games by taking care of the ball. You have to run the ball some, which we didn't do any. Even when it's tough you have to find a way to get hard-nosed and run the ball some. Take care of the ball. You have to avoid giving up big plays in this type of game, which we weren't able to do. We gave them an easy one and you just can't give them an easy one. And you have to avoid penalties, which are crucial. We had a couple penalties. Whether it is interference and whether it's our opinion or whose opinion doesn't matter, we kept drives alive with penalties. It was a good football game, our team has improved a great deal, but we're absolutely a work in progress.”
Wideout Conner VernonOn last offensive play of the game:“We called a slant and I attacked the outside and stuck it. Things opened up but unfortunately the defensive made a good play and was able to get his hand up and bat the ball down.”
On overall play of the offense:“With a defense like Boston College who is ranked sixth nationally and first in the ACC, you have to put points up to have chance. Turnovers hurt us as well at crucial times, I know I had two fumbles and once on our side of the field. You are not going to beat a team like that playing that way.”
On preparing for the rest of the season:“Back to work again tomorrow, we are going to try to win these next two games. We are going to take it one game at a time. We have Georgia Tech next week, another tough team, so we really have to be prepared. We know they run the triple option, so it will be a tough week for our defense and from what I remember from last year they have a pretty tough defense as well. So we are going to work really hard this week to win the game.”
Safety August CampbellOn his fumble recovery for a touchdown:“I think it was great effort by the rest of the guys.
Walt Canty was there to make the hit, and luckily
Abraham Kromah didn't recover the fumble. That left me open to get the ball to scoop and score. So, I think it was a great team effort.”
Quarterback Sean RenfreeOn Boston College:“You have to give credit to Boston College. They play hard and have a good plan.”
On Duke's final two plays:“Nobody's going to put his head down. We have two games left against two very good teams. We're going to prepare as we have all season long.”
