DURHAM, N.C. - Throughout the fall, senior Christie Kaestner will send blog updates to GoDuke.com, giving fans inside access to the Duke women's lacrosse team. Read her sixth post below for the inside scoop on the team's recent activities.
Greetings,
Hey parents, do you miss us yet? I know we sure miss you. We had an incredible Duke Lax parents' weekend, complete with beautiful weather, great competition, new parent faces, some old ones (holler at the Heinz's for stopping by), and the first Duke Quidditch match of the year! That's right, you read correctly, a Quidditch match … you know … Harry Potter … broomsticks and quaffles … my mom and dad asked one of the players how they played and she replied, “It's exactly the same as in the books except we don't fly…” Dead serious. I should mention that I bought a shirt and am wearing it as we speak … and will be wearing it to the midnight showing on the 19th. And so will Sarah for her project on it in her class. Dumbledore's beard I can't wait.
But enough about our second favorite sport you're probably wondering how lax is?! Emma, Sarah, and I did not actually die from the Krispy Kreme burger (I knew you were wondering) and everyone played very well this weekend. We played Florida on Saturday and I think Taylor Virden's behind the back shot attempt wins for most surprising play of the year thus far. Amanda Jones and I had some hilarious moments talking about how eager everyone is to play the whole field and how much we stink at getting people to hold the line. We woke up far too early Sunday to take on JMU, Richmond, Longwood, and Virginia Tech. We got many combinations of people in the games and there were too many fantastic plays to even mention in this oh-so-short blog space. It was great to see some old friends (shout out to the Eulitts) and everyone had a great time getting pinney tans, stuffing our faces with bagels, listening to choice music (thanks DL), and getting used to one another on the field in preparation for a tremendous spring!
Some other weekend highlights: Sydney Peterson's parents came out to watch practice Friday and they were so cute sitting together on the sidelines; it was like they were having a picnic on a glorious afternoon on a grassy knoll. I learned some secret musical talents of Sophia Sourlis thanks to her mom, but I know she'll be embarrassed if I throw it out there in my blog, so I will surprisingly refrain. I believe Lauren Martin gave a tour with her mother to some recruits, prefacing it by telling us that her mom is just tryna relive the glory dayz. I don't doubt that.
Practice has been going well this week in preparation for our last fall ball outing at Georgetown this Saturday (miss you Ash, it won't be the same). We have some killer bruises (I haven't been able to lift my arm correctly all week, thanks Kat) and a new play in place to test out. The seniors are planning some amusing drills for our last practice and HALLOWEEN is looming this weekend. The class of twenty eleven is looking to three-peat as costume champions at the annual team competition and party at Ker's house … dun dun dunnnnn. Our first away trip is tomorrow and I personally will be jumping on the beds, just like my freshman year with Allie Johnson ('08), who told me to never let the new thrill of your own hotel bed on an away trip die out. Should be a busy and eventful weekend. Check back in next week for what I'm sure will be magnificent stories.
Love, lax, and the wheels on the bus goin' round and round,
-Sevs
