DURHAM, N.C. - Throughout the fall, senior Christie Kaestner will send blog updates to GoDuke.com, giving fans inside access to the Duke women's lacrosse team. Read her fifth post below for the inside scoop on the team's recent activities.
Howdy y'all,
To explain my greeting, I should tell you that Emma Hamm, Sarah Bullard, and I just returned from the North Carolina State Fair. I am so disappointed I didn't think to wear my cowboy boots and hat; I would have fit in much better. And yes, we did in fact purchase the Krispy Kreme Bacon Cheeseburger … and yes, we did add ketchup … and yes, we did all have a bite … and yes, we are all still alive at this point. Hopefully our arteries won't clog after just the one bite and we'll be alive and well to take on our competition this weekend (hopefully). I still feel a little queasy, it was after fried Oreos I should add (poor life decision). The fair was on our apartment bucket list and we are so excited to check our first thing off!
So what's new with Duke Lax? Here in Durham, the weather has stayed beautiful. We are gearing up for a full weekend of lax, and we are all so excited to see parents this weekend! I personally have not seen my rents in seven weeks, a new (sad) record, and I don't think I'll sleep tonight I'm so excited (I do wish my sis, Ashby, and bro, Johnny, were coming, too). Sandy and Dirt Beyel are already in town as Casey Beyel had surgery on Tuesday and I am pleased to inform it went very well! She's resting (fairly) comfortably at the WaDuke (lucky devil, pardon the pun), and will be around this weekend to take hugs! I'm sure our parents are just as excited to see each other as they are us, and they might even have too much fun when they get together, especially after so long apart. Bill and Norma Hamm, Lyman and Julie Bullard, and Kim and John Kaestner under one roof … the three of us hope they decide to stay and move in.
We had a terrific full week of practice on the grass and worked very hard on transition, pieces of our offense, and team defense. Some highlights for ya: Mollie Mackler is taking shots (and saving them for that matter); Caroline Keating blew by a three-man triple team on 1v1s (yeah, figure that out, thanks coaching staff from an attacker's point of view); Maddie Salamone has unveiled some blinding neon yellow cleats; Rebecca Krom got out in dodgeball in the most pathetic attempt at a dodge I've ever seen (sorry Krom, I saw it haha); Emma Hamm got cleared to play 7v7 defense (weird, I know); Taylor Virden cleared a ball by humming it about 65 yards up the field; and Sara Godfrey has a bionic shoulder contraption happening yet is still playing some mighty fine defense these days (she's been bruising me up pretty good!). Overall, Duke Lax is doing our thing and getting better everyday. We take on Florida on Saturday and then have four games on Sunday. We can't wait to get back on the field.
Shout out to the Duke women's soccer team for beating Boston College last night on their Breast Cancer Awareness game day, a huge win for our ladies and my oh-so-dear friend, Carey Goodman, reppin' that 7! We love our fellow athletes here at Duke and I got chills at the unveiling of the men's bball championship banner last Thursday; we want one of those - stay tuned! They got their rings, played a scrimmage, and Casey Peters rainbowed the ball to Miles Plumlee for an insane dunk …youtube it, you will love it!
What else, what else … oh yes, a group of us have signed up for tickets to the midnight showing of Harry Potter 7. It could be the highlight of the fall and I personally am counting down … and might have a costume … and a wand … too much? Just kidding, but seriously, never too much for HP7. I think that's about it for this time, thanks for stopping by. In case I don't see you again, good afternoon, good evening, and good night!
Love, lax, and clogged arteries,
-Christie Keene Kaestner
