GREENSBORO, N.C. – The 10th-ranked Duke women's cross country team traveled to the Hagan Stone Cross Country Classic on Saturday, Oct.2, with three Blue Devils breaking personal records –
Esther Vermeer,
Devotia Moore and
Ashley Berry – and all nine participants finishing in the top ten.
Vermeer, a junior, grabbed the first-place finish and toppled a personal record with a time of 17:38.1. Along with Vermeer, Moore broke a personal record with a time of 18:20.8 which was good for a fourth place finish, and Berry toppled a personal record in only her third appearance this season, finishing eighth with a time of 18:44.1.
“We had a lot of personal records broken today, and we are pleased that Esther picked up the overall win for us,” women's head coach
Kevin Jermyn said. “A lot of the girls came in with a good bit of confidence and that showed with all of our runners finishing in the top ten; that is definitely a step in the right direction. We are going to continue to work hard and put together two good weeks of training to get ready for the Blue Ridge Mountain Open at Appalachian State in two weeks.”
The Blue Devils placed all nine runners inside the top ten, with Vermeer finishing in first place followed by senior
Kristina Krasich in second (17:57.2) and freshman
Gabby Levac in third (18:09.3). Moore took fourth, freshman
Jessie Rubin crossed the line in fifth (18:30.4), junior
Leslie Morrison grabbed sixth (18:38.0) and Berry and junior
Virginia Hine (18:54.6) finished eighth and ninth, respectively.
Up next for the Duke women is the Blue Ridge Mountain Open in Boone, N.C., on Oct. 15. The race will be held at State Farm Fields, and the 5K Gold race is set to begin at 3:00 p.m. (EST).
