CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Three Duke women's golfers -- freshman
Laetitia Beck, freshman
Alejandra Cangrejo and sophomore
Lindy Duncan -- each finished in the top 20 of the Tar Heel Invitational, which concluded on Sunday at the 6,285-yard, par 72 Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C.
As a team, Duke closed the weekend with a three-under-par, 285, on its way to finishing third overall with a 54-hole total of 851, which was a season-best. Alabama won the team title with a three-day total of 836, while LSU (848), Duke (851), Virginia (862), North Carolina (866), Michigan State (870), Tulane (872), Vanderbilt (874), Georgia (874) and Wake Forest (876) rounded out the top 10.
“I think overall we had a pretty good performance over there,” said Duke Head Coach
Dan Brooks. “The course was scoreable and obviously by Alabama's scores you can see how good they did. But we had some very good things happen. We had freshmen that were going low -- that bodes well for the future. It was nice to see Lindy come in with a four-under-par the last day. She was knocking at the door throughout the tournament. She finally got some putts to fall. [I saw] a lot of positives.”
Duke's score could have been even lower as the Blue Devils dropped five shots over the final two holes on Sunday.
Registering her third straight round of even or under par, Beck closed the weekend tied for sixth overall, which is a career-best placement for the Caesarea, Israel native. She opened the day with two birdies over her first three holes and made the turn at two-under-par, 34, with a total of three birdies on the front. Beck added two bogeys and seven pars on the back nine to close with a 72. For the day, she hit 14 greens, 10 fairways and had 31 putts.
Turning in Duke's best round of the day was Duncan, who posted a four-under-par, 68. A product of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Duncan concluded the weekend with a four-under-par, 212, which marks the third straight under par finish to open the season. On Sunday, Duncan matched a season high with six birdies and hit 16 greens on her way to shooting four-under-par. She totaled four birdies on the front nine and played the final 12 holes at three-under-par. Duncan hit 13 fairways and had 30 putts on the day. She missed greens on the sixth and 18th holes and went on to make her only bogeys of the day.
For the weekend, Duncan placed tied for 14th, individually.
Cangrejo concluded her best tournament as a collegiate golfer with a 73 on the final day, which gave her a three-day total of three-under-par, 213. Out of Bogota, Columbia, Cangrejo made the turn at one-over-par, 37, but made birdies on No. 10 and No. 13 to move to one-under-par through 13 holes. She suffered back-to-back bogeys on the 14th and 15 holes and followed with three consecutive pars to close out the day. She was tied for 16th overall in the tournament.
Courtney Ellenbogen rounded out the best tournament of her sophomore campaign as she posted rounds of 73, 71 and 72 to finish tied for 24th with a 216. She notched four birdies on Sunday as she hit 12 greens, 11 fairways and had 30 putts. Ellenbogen, a native of Blacksburg, Va., was two-under-par through 10 holes before suffering a double bogey on the 388-yard, par four 12th hole. She came back to birdie the final two par fives -- No. 13 and No. 17 -- on her way to finishing at even par with bogeys on the 16th and 18th holes.
Senior
Kim Donovan signed for her second straight round of 76 in the final round as she finished tied for 61st with a 226. Donovan, who is from Hopkinton, Mass., had not finished lower than 25th in the first two tournaments. She hit only nine fairways, 11 greens and had 32 putts on Sunday.
Duke will next compete in the Landfall Tradition from Oct. 22-24 at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C.
