SAN DIEGO,Calif. – Duke women's tennis players Hanna Mar and Monica Gorny participated in the first round of singles and doubles at the San Diego State Fall Classic on Friday and both advanced to the semifinals in singles and doubles.
The Duke duo of Gorny and Mar began the day with doubles, facing off against Nina Jaworski and Anna Yang from Cal State Northridge. The duo picked up victory number one for the Blue Devils by a score of 8-5 and will advance to take on Juliette Coupez and Maja Sujica from the University of San Diego in the semifinals on Saturday. The match is scheduled to begin at 12 noon.
In singles action, Mar was matched up against Cara Brown from San Diego. Mar won the match by a score of 6-1, 6-1 and advanced with the win to the semifinals. Mar is scheduled to compete against Julia Wais from San Diego State University.
Gorny was also victorious in her opening singles match. Gorny picked up the win, 6-0, 6-4, from Cal State Northridge's Sabrina Man-Son-Hing and will advance to the semifinals to face Laura Claus from San Diego.
The Duke women will resume play at the SDSU Fall Classic tomorrow with doubles beginning at 12 noon and singles action will immediate follow.
