DURHAM, N.C. - Throughout the fall, senior Christie Kaestner will post blog updates, giving fans inside access to the Duke women's lacrosse team. Read her second post below for the inside scoop on the team's progress.
Back again?
How exciting that you've returned to read more about your favorite women's lacrosse team-Duke of course! Phew I had so much to catch you up on last week…several weeks at once can be jammed packed, but from here on out you'll get one week updates at a timeJ So last week it was beautiful and sunny…did I mention it rains here too? And by rains I mean RAINS! Before I get into that, I should mention we had our first intra-squad scrimmage of the year on Friday. Things went extremely well! Competition was high, moves were quick, and people raced all over the field. With our Syracuse scrimmage coming up, the team is anxious to get together and take on some fresh faces!
We started off this week basically swimming to practice. It's actually hilarious, but when the rain comes down, a certain uniform comes out, and the ENTIRE female population at Duke is wearing it. When my roommates- Sarah Bullard and Emma Hamm- and I got ready to leave for class Monday morning, we realized we were all ironically in uniform: rain boots, black leggings, a tee shirt, and a rain jacket. After splashing through puddles to get to class, I told Jasmine Thomas she was lucky to play an indoor sport, to which she replied that she never gets practice cancelled due to weather. Very true, but did I mention that it was just rain all week? No thunder or lightening? I'll take that dry court this time, Jas ;)
Due to our field turning into a swamp, we moved up to the turf and started week number two of practice! It was a rough start to the week as Casey Beyel, a senior, went down with a torn ACL. She's holding up well all things considered and being doted on by all kinds of people. She was already planning on a fifth year so now she claims she'll be taking Claire Kimel to kindergarten by the time she finally graduates! The rain let up a bit and we had several productive days. Defensive footwork, stickwork, shooting, and man up situations, oh my! Even with the baseball team working out on the field next to us, we got a lot of good work in and are improving so much every day. I love the new faces out on the field and their enthusiasm is a great spark of energy for everyone around them. 7v7 at the end of practice is my personal favorite and all of the different combinations on the field are cranking up the heat and bringing their A-games. We are like kids in a candy shop-so much excitement to be out here doing what we love that it's contagious! Speaking of kids, I met Maddy Morrissey's 2-year-old brother this weekend and I might move in with them I'm so obsessed. Or maybe he could move into our apartment…I don't think Sarah would mind! We're off on a team-bonding trip this weekend to Hyco Lake. I'm sure I'll have many hilarious stories for you next time if the trip is anything like past years (shout out to Kim Wenger's phone sitting at the bottom of the canal at Wrightsville beach). And after Hyco Lake, we take on Syracuse on Sunday! If you find yourself in the area, come on out to Chapel Hill (I know, I know, but hey, we'll be there too) on Sunday at 1:30. Check back in next week for more to come!

Kaes
