DURHAM, N.C. – After 36 and one-half years in the athletic training profession,
Dave Engelhardt, a member of the Duke University athletic staff since 1981, announced his retirement on Tuesday effective January 29, 2010.
A native of Chaska, Minn., Engelhardt joined the Duke athletic department in July of 1981 as the Head Football Athletic Trainer. A certified member of the National Athletic Trainers Association since 1974, he was named the school's Head Athletic Trainer in 1988 following the retirement of Duke's legendary Max Crowder. After 12 seasons as Duke's Head Football Athletic Trainer, Engelhardt served as the Head Men's Basketball Athletic Trainer from 1992-04. Since 1988, he has supervised a staff that today includes 11 athletic trainers and two physical therapists.
Engelhardt earned undergraduate degrees in athletic training and history from Mankato State University in 1973, and served as the Head Athletic Trainer at the University of Minnesota-Morris for eight years prior to coming to Durham. He was inducted into the Cougar Hall of Fame at the University of Minnesota-Morris in October of 1998.
Robert “Hap” Zarzour, a member of the Duke athletic training staff since 1992, will assume the administrative responsibilities vacated by Engelhardt as the new Director of Athletic Training. Zarzour, a 1982 graduate of Bowling Green State University, arrived at Duke in 1992 after an eight-year stint at Western Michigan University. He has served as Duke's Head Football Athletic Trainer for the past 18 seasons.
