DURHAM, N.C.- Former Blue Devil men's lacrosse standouts Zack Greer and Ryan McFadyen were selected in the 2009 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft this evening in Buffalo, N.Y. Greer went as the No. 3 pick overall, while McFadyen went 35th in the 62-player draft.
The Minnesota Swarm picked Greer with its first pick of the evening. A 2008 graduate of Duke, Greer played for the Long Island Lizards of Major League Lacrosse this past summer. Despite missing much of the season to injury, Greer finished with 12 goals and two assists in five games. The Minnesota Swarm finished 6-10 overall last season in the NLL.
The 2008 USILA Attackman of the Year, Greer was a three-time All-America for the Blue Devils, finishing his career at Duke with 206 goals and 283 career points. His 206 goals is the most in NCAA lacrosse history, while his 67 in 2007 is tops in Duke history.
McFadyen had his number called in the fourth round by the Colorado Mammoth. The Mendham, N.J., native anchored the Blue Devil defense in 2009 that allowed 8.43 goals per game. He started all 19 games this season and picked up 24 ground balls. For his career, McFadyen played in 75 games, starting 44 of those, and picked up 82 ground balls. The Mammoth closed out its 2009 season with a 7-9 overall record.
The 2010 NLL season kicks off on January 8 with the Orlando Titans taking on the Philadelphia Wings.
