DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - On Monday at the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) Match Play Championship, the No. 10 seeded Duke women's golf team downed Colorado, 5-0, in the morning and then lost, 3-2, in the afternoon to No. 11 seed TCU at the LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Duke jumped out early against Colorado and never looked back as the Buffaloes never led any match and only lost seven holes out of all five matches. Freshman Lindy Duncan downed Dominique Pytlewski 4 and 2, junior Kim Donovan defeated Emily Talley 7 and 6, Stacey Kim knocked off Christine Kim 4 and 3, Courtney Ellenbogen downed Meaghan Kari 2 up and senior Alison Whitaker cruised to a 4 and 3 win over Taylor Doyle.
In the second match of the day, No. 10 seed Duke went up against No. 11 seed TCU. The Blue Devils got off to a slow start trailing in four of the five matches but came back to make a run. Both Duncan and Donovan came back to register wins as Duncan downed Rachel Raastad 2 up and Donovan notched a 1 up win over Brooke Beeler.
Both Whitaker and Kim trailed in both of their matches the entire way and ended up falling. Kim fell to Valentine Derrey 1 up and Whitaker lost 3 and 2 to Melissa Loh. The loss for Whitaker was the first in her four-year career at Duke at the NGCA Match Play Championship. Her record is now at 12-1.
The match came down to the fourth slot with Ellenbogen against Louise Kristersson. Kristersson won the first hole but Ellenbogen came back to win the next two holes with pars taking the lead. A freshman from Blacksburg, Va., Ellenbogen led the next 13 holes before Kristersson came back and took the lead with three holes remaining. Ellenbogen was 1 down with one hole left and suffered a bogey on the last hole to fall 2 up in the match.
Both Duncan and Donovan won both of their matches on Monday for the Blue Devils.
Duke is playing in the NGCA Match Play for the sixth time since 2003 and 2009 marks the first time the Blue Devils have not won the title. Duke had won the championship in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2008.
The Blue Devils will next take on ninth-seeded Kent State on Tuesday morning in their final match, while Auburn will play LSU in the championship match.
