DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke women's lacrosse team has announced its schedule for fall 2009. After tallying a 15-6 overall record and reaching the Elite Eight in last season's NCAA Tournament, the team has high expectations for 2010 and will begin preparation for the upcoming season with the start of fall practices on Monday, Sept. 14.
"The start of a new year is always very exciting," head coach Kerstin Kimel said. "Our returning players have done a great job over the last few weeks in welcoming our nine freshmen and helping them acclimate to life at Duke as student-athletes. Our staff and players are very much looking forward to getting sticks in our hands and beginning the process of building our 2010 team on Monday."
Duke will host eight matches this fall, beginning with a game against Vanderbilt at 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 2. The Blue Devils take on ACC-rival North Carolina at home on Thursday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m., then travel to Cedar Lane Park in Bel Air, Md. on Saturday, Oct. 17 as part of the Lax for Leukemia event. Duke will play Maryland, Towson and James Madison at 9 a.m., 10:20 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., respectively.
The Blue Devils face Florida at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24, before hosting the Duke Fall Invitational on Sunday, Oct. 25. Davidson, Florida, Richmond, Louisville and Virginia Tech will all travel to Durham to participate in the event, which kicks off with simultaneous Duke vs. Louisville and Florida vs. Richmond match-ups on two different fields from 9-9:30 a.m. The Blue Devils will also face Virginia Tech at 10:10 a.m., Florida at 10:45, Davidson at 11:55 a.m. and Richmond at 1:05 p.m. to conclude the fall season.
"We are excited about the challenges that lie before us in playing such a competitive fall schedule," Kimel said. "We look forward to seeing many new faces on the field for us and having those players gain valuable experience throughout the fall against the great teams we will see. We expect our fall schedule to be great preparation for the 2010 season."
