HYANNIS, Mass. – Eric Pfisterer and Alex Hassan of the Duke baseball team were each named to the 2009 Under Armour Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star Team, the Cape Cod League announced Thursday.
Pfisterer, a freshman left-handed pitcher with the Wareham Gatemen, will play for the West Division, while Hassan, a junior outfielder and pitcher with the Orleans Firebirds, will play for the East Division. Both Pfisterer and Hassan will have the opportunity to play at Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox, on Thursday, July 23, at the 47th Under Armour Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star Game.
Pfisterer has emerged as one of the top starters in the Cape Cod League, boasting a 3-0 record and a 1.65 ERA in five starts with the Gatemen. He opened his summer season with a 12-inning hitless streak and has since struck out 26 batters in 27.1 innings. Cape League hitters are batting just .122 off of the 6-2, 220 pound southpaw.
Hassan is back in the Cape Cod League for the second straight year and is once again pulling double duty for Orleans. As an outfielder, he is batting .272 with two doubles, a triple and a home run. He also closes for the Firebirds and has two saves and a 1.50 ERA through five appearances. Hassan, a 20th round draft choice by the Boston Red Sox, has driven in a team-high 15 RBI.
Pfisterer and Hassan are two of five Duke baseball players in the Cape Cod League this season. They are the second and third players to represent Duke on the CCBL All-Star Team since 2008, joining junior left-hander Christopher Manno, who was an All-Star and All-League selection last summer.
