PRAGUE, Czech Republic -- Former Duke standout Caroline Cryer scored a team-best three goals to lead the United States to an 8-7 win over defending champion Australia in the gold medal match of the 2009 Federation of International Lacrosse World Cup on Saturday in Prague, Czech Republic.
The world crown is the sixth for the Americans, who also claimed top honors in 1982, 1989, 1993, 1997 and 2001. The U.S. went unbeaten in seven games at the World Cup, outscoring its opponents by an impressive 114-48 count. Canada picked up the bronze medal witha 14-9 victory over England.
Cryer scored two goals in the opening half as the score was tied, 3-3, at intermission. Rising Duke junior Sarah Bullard tallied her only goal of the game to give the Americans a 4-3 advantage and begin a string of four straight tallies for the U.S. to open the second stanza. The United States built an 8-4 lead before the Australians scored the final three goals to account for the final margin.
Former Duke goalkeeper Megan Huether was credited for one save in reserve duty while former Blue Devil star Katie Chrest recorded two ground balls in the game.
