DURHAM, N.C. ? Following sectional qualifying for the U.S. Women's Open around the country, four Duke women's golfers have qualified for the open, which will be played at the Saucon Valley Country Club from July 9-12 in Bethlehem, Pa.
Amanda Blumenherst, Lindy Duncan, Anna Grzebien, Jennie Lee all advanced through sectional qualifying in different states to qualify.
Blumenherst and Lee both competed at the Westmoreland Country Club in Wilmette, Ill., where Blumenherst placed second and Lee tied for fourth. A 2009 Duke graduate from Scottsdale, Ariz., Blumenherst fired rounds of 73 and 67 for a total of 140. She will be playing in her third U.S. Open.
A native of Henderson, Nev., and also a 2009 Duke graduate, Lee turned in rounds of 74 and 70 to post a 144. She will compete in her fourth straight and fifth overall U.S Women's Open.
Turning in a stellar season so far on the LPGA Tour, Grzebien went up against a solid field at the Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Md., on June 15 and placed 14th. A 2007 Duke graduate and 2005 NCAA Individual Champion, Grzebien registered rounds of 70 and 71 for a total of 141. She has totaled $65,939 so far this season on the LPGA Tour, which ranks 70th overall.
Duncan, who is an incoming freshman for the Blue Devils, placed third with rounds of 74 and 70 at the Plantation Bay Country Club in Ormand Beach, Fla. She received one of only four available spots at the qualifying site and will be making her first appearance in the U.S. Women's Open.
Duke will boast a total of six current and former Blue Devils playing in the U.S. Women's Open as former two-time All-America Brittany Lang is fully exempt for the U.S. Open in 2009 and did not have to go through qualifying. Mina Harigae, who played at Duke during the fall semester of 2008, also qualified as she won the Illinois sectional with a five-under-par, 139.
