DURHAM, N.C. ? Senior goalkeeper Kim Imbesi was today named the WomensLacrosse.com Division I Defensive Player of the Week, the organization announced. Additionally, senior attacker Caroline Cryer was included on the WomensLacrosse.com Weekly Honor Roll.
Imbesi made nine saves in the Duke women's lacrosse team's first round overtime win over Virginia on May 10, but perhaps her two biggest saves of the season came in the final moments of the game. First, Imbesi turned away a UVA shot with just 49 seconds left in regulation which preserved the 13-13 tie heading into overtime.
After the Blue Devils scored in the first 3:00 extra period to go up 14-13 heading into the second one, the Cavaliers won the draw and held the ball, finding a shot with 2:30 on the clock which Imbesi again stopped to keep the Duke lead at one. The Blue Devils held the ball for the remainder of play and held on for the thrilling home victory to send them into the quarterfinals. Imbesi played all 66 minutes in the cage on Sunday, adding two ground balls to her ledger for the afternoon.
In her last five games, Imbesi is averaging eight saves per contest.
Cryer was named to the Weekly Honor Roll after a four goal-two assist outing against Virginia, adding four draw controls.
Duke (15-5) will next face No. 4 Penn this Saturday at 1 p.m. at Drexel University's Vidas Field in Philadelphia. The Blue Devils are making their 12th straight appearance in the NCAA Championships, now 13-11 in the tournament and in search of their fifth consecutive trip to the national semifinals.
