RACHO SANTA FE, CA -- Senior Michael Quagliano and freshman Spencer Anderson posted match play wins on Tuesday to lead Duke to a 2-1-2 win over Louisville in the Callaway Collegiate Match Play. The win gave the Blue Devils a 2-1 match-play record in the event and an 11th place finish overall.
"I am proud of the way our guys closed the week," said head coach Jamie Green. "We have a challenging stretch of tournaments leading into the ACC Championship. We play three tournament in a row, beginning with the Administaff Augusta State Invitational, so this is an important stretch for this team. We will be ready to meet that challenge."
Quagliano was one-down through four holes in his match with Chris Biuso before taking control. The Ardsley, N.Y., native won three straight holes (Nos. 15-17) to take a two-up lead with 10 holes remaining. After dropping the par 4 third hole, Quagliano won No. 4 with a par to regain a two-up edge. Biuso got back to within one hole by winning No. 7 but Quagliano went par-birdie to win No. 8 and No. 9 for a 3 and 1 victory.
"Michael [Quagliano] again showed his match play experience by applying constant pressure on his opponent throughout the day," added Green. "He posted our first point of the day to give us momentum down the closing stretch of holes."
Anderson got off to a hot start in his match winning three of the first four holes to go three-up. The Pacific Palisades, Calif., native carried a two-up lead through eight holes before running into trouble. After dropping holes No. 3-5 to fall one-down, Anderson carded a birdie on No. 6 to get back to all square. He also birdied No. 8 to regain the lead and then matched Louisville's Riley Wheeldon shot for shot over the final holes. Anderson secured the 1-up victory by running in an 18-foot par putt on the final hole of the match (No. 12).
"The win today was very satisfying, especially after losing a couple of matches yesterday despite playing pretty well," said Anderson. "This was a good team win and will be a good building block for our upcoming tournament schedule."
Junior Adam Long battled Adam Hadwin throughout the day in a see-saw match that came down to the wire. He was two-up with four holes to play before dropping No. 9, No. 10 and No. 11 to fall behind. Long sank a 20-foot putt on the closing 12th hole to win the hole and halve the match.
Senior Clark Klaasen also had a hard fought match on Tuesday. The Grand Rapids, Mich., native fell behind early in the round but continued to battle back. He was two-down with five holes to play but carded a birdie on No. 7 to get back to one-down. Klaasen then sank a 12-foot birdie putt on No. 11 to halve the match.
Sophomore Wes Roach dropped his match 4 and 2 to Louisville's Conner Arendell.
