NEW YORK ? The Duke men's and women's track & field team continued their hot streak as they turned in one school record, an NCAA Provisional qualifier, and more post-season IC4A and ECAC marks today in day one of competition at the New Balance Armory Collegiate Invitational in New York City.
The Duke school record to fall came in the men's long jump, with Jade Ellis setting a new indoor record with a leap of 24-7 in his first jump of the competition. The mark was good for fourth-place overall and scored five points for Duke in the championship event. It was also an IC4A qualifier and missed an NCAA Provisional standard by just a quarter of an inch. The old school record was 24-2.5 and was set in 1998.
The NCAA Provisional mark came in the championship division of the women's distance medley relay, as the team of Virginia Hine, Devotia Moore, Cydney Ross, and Molly Lehman took eighth overall in 11:29.57 ? the Blue Devils' fastest run of the season in the event. Hine ran the leadoff 1200 in 3:34.0, followed by Moore in the 400 in 56.9. Ross came through the 800 in 2:11.4, and Lehman closed it out with a 4:47.3 1600-meter run, as the time was both the NCAA Provisional and ECAC qualifier.
For the men, sophomore Ryan McDermott ran the 3K in a personal-best time of 8:16.92, an IC4A qualifier and fourth all-time at Duke. Cory Nanni took fourth in the championship 1000-meters in 2:26.89, narrowly missing the Duke top-five but setting an IC4A mark.
On the women's side, freshman Nicole Ragucci was an ECAC qualifier in the women's 500-meters early Friday, clocking 1:15.78 to win her heat in her first attempt at the distance collegiately. Duke saw two athletes ? Anna Farias-Eisner (2:54.05) and Leslie Morrison (2:55.02) set ECAC marks in the 1000-meters.
In the field events, Amy Fryt jumped 12-5.50 in the championship pole vault to move into fifth-place all-time in the event indoors at Duke. Anne Marie Gordon and Cassie Ludwig tied for first in the women's college pole vault, each setting the IC4A mark with their height of 12-3.50.
The meet continues tomorrow, Feb. 7 and will conclude around 4:30 p.m. with the men's 4x800 relay.
