PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FL ? Freshman Spencer Anderson and sophomore Wes Roach each shot two-over 74s on Tuesday to lead Duke to a 13-over 301 in the final round of the John Hayt Invitational. The Blue Devils closed the event 15th overall with a 932.
LSU captured the tournament title with a 21-over 885. Arizona State (893), Georgia Southern (895), Georgia State (900) and Tennessee (901) rounded out the top five.
Duke got off to a good start in the final round playing the opening nine holes at five-under par on the challenging Sawgrass Oceanside Course. The Blue Devils could not sustain the momentum after the turn but still closed the round with their best score of the 54-hole tournament.
Roach used his two-over 74 on Tuesday to climb 11 spots and finish tied for 30th with a 13-over 229. He carded two birdies, 12 pars and four bogeys in the final round.
Junior Adam Long shot a five-over 77 for the third straight day to finish tied for 44th overall. He had four birdies, including three on the opening nine holes of play, but also suffered four bogeys and two double-bogeys after the turn on Tuesday.
Clark Klaasen and Matthew Pierce shot matching 76s in the final round to tie for 68th at +22. Both players shot 80-82-76=238 in the 54-hole event. Pierce, who was playing for the first time this season, competed as an individual.
Senior Michael Quagliano had an eight-over 80 on the day to finish 74th with a 240 (81-79-80).
Anderson had two birdies, 12 pars and four bogeys for his round of 74 on Tuesday. He finished strong after a slow start in the opening two rounds to close the tournament tied for 76th.
Duke returns to action March 8-9 at the General Jim Hackler Invitational in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
