DURHAM, N.C. ? Six members of the Duke women's soccer team have been named to the All-ACC Academic Women's Soccer Team on Wednesday, which was released by the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). Earning honors for the Blue Devils were Kendall Bradley, KayAnne Gummersall, Kelly Hathorn, Christie McDonald, Cody Newman and Lorraine Quinn.
Bradley, a sophomore from Durham, N.C., started six of 24 matches for the Blue Devils in 2008. She attempted six shots in 1,002 minutes played. Bradley was also an ESPN The Magazine All-Academic District III selection this year.
After suffering from an ankle injury for most of her sophomore season, Gummersall came back strong in 2008 with a team-best 15 goals and 34 points. She also added four assists and five game-winning goals. In the ACC stats, Gummersall ranked third in points, tied for third in goals, third in points per game (1.42) and fourth in goals per game (0.62). Gummersall, who is from Wilmette, Ill., played some of her best soccer at the end of the season as she notched goals in each of the four NCAA College Cup contests, while finishing the year with three multi-goal games.
Hathorn, who is a senior from Durham, N.C., started 12 of 24 contests for Duke, while notching two goals and one assist for five points. She concluded her career with eight goals and seven assists over four years. Hathorn was also an ESPN The Magazine All-Academic District III selection this year.
One of the top defenders in the league, McDonald helped guide the Blue Devils to a school-record tying 13 shutouts in 2008. A product of Newnan, Ga., McDonald started all 24 matches and notched two assists. McDonald was also an ESPN The Magazine All-Academic District III and NSCAA/adidas Scholar All-America honoree. She is a four-time selection to the All-ACC Academic squad.
An All-ACC Freshman selection and TopDrawerSoccer.com All-Rookie second team honoree, Newman started 13 of 24 matches in her first year of collegiate soccer. A product of Bellerose, N.Y., Newman notched four goals and four assists for 12 points on the season.
Quinn, a native of Farmingdale, N.Y., earned All-Region honors for the second straight year following another solid season in the midfield position. On the season, Quinn notched five goals, seven assists and 17 points for the Blue Devils. She notched a career day against Georgia with three goals, which all came in the first half. Quinn also posted two game-winning goals.
To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career.
As a team, Duke registered a 15-6-3 overall record and advanced to its second straight quarterfinals of the NCAA College Cup in 2008.
