DURHAM, N.C. - Five Blue Devils scored in double figures as sixth-ranked Duke ran away from Alaska Anchorage 100-32 on Sunday afternoon from Cameron Indoor Stadium in Duke's final exhibition contest of the season.
"We have a lot of attacking people, and we need to attack," head coach Joanne P. McCallie said. "Timing is important, and not everyone can attack at the same time. That's how we're learning from each other, how to move that ball and then bring the best out in everybody. In the second half we really did that, we came out aggressively."
Junior Jasmine Thomas led the way for Duke scoring 20 points with 14 coming in the second half. The Fairfax, Va. native shot 7-of-14 (.500) from the floor and 4-of-6 (.667) from three.
The point guard also handed out three assists and forced three steals.
Junior Karima Christmas and freshman Allison Vernerey each chipped in with 18 points. Vernerey also grabbed 10 rebounds to record a double-double while going 6-of-8 (.750) from the floor.
Christmas was just one rebound shy or recording a double-double as well. Her nine rebounds were second on the team with the Houston, Texas native shooting 6-of-8 (.750) from the floor including connecting on four three pointers.
"I didn't really think about it to much it was just, you know, I felt good out there and I just took the shots," Christmas said.
Senior Joy Cheek added 14 and five rebounds, while freshman Alexis Rogers rounded out Duke's double-digit scorers netting 10 and four rebounds.
"She's [Rogers] an interesting person to coach, she's pretty flexible," McCallie said. "She did some things today that she's never done in practice. Meaning I put her in some positions today that she's never played before. I think she's a very durable, versatile player, and she's definitely getting better."
Alaska Anchorage stayed competitive with the Blue Devils for the first five minutes, but with the score tied at 10 Duke went on a 19-3 run and never looked back. Duke would allow only 22 points over the next 35 minutes holding the Seawolves to just 8-of-41 (.195) shooting for the game and 2-of-21 (.095) shooting in the second half.
"I think that they are just a feisty good team and you can tell why they're ranked in their discipline," McCallie said. "I think that initially we just weren't as sharp on stances as we wanted to be. And they were doing a nice job on that defense, a match-up, man-zone kind of thing, really trying to protect the paint. So I liked our IQ intelligence throughout the game and adjusting to that."
Duke was able to force 33 turnovers thanks to their full-court press scoring 24 points off the Seawolves miscues.
The Blue Devils finished shooting 33-of-63 (.524) from the field and dominated Alaska Anchorage in the paint outscoring the Seawolves 28-2.
Duke also connected on 13-of-25 (.520) from three.
Sophomore Kathleen Scheer ended with nine points, junior Krystal Thomas with five, senior Bridgette Mitchell with four and sophomore Chelsea Hopkins with two.
The Blue Devils will tip-off the regular season on the road against Houston Baptist on Friday, Nov. 13 at 8:30 p.m.
